when you buy retails software 9/10 it wont be the latest version, but once installed it will ask if you want to check for latest version, as the retailer may have had that in stock for the last 6 month or even 12 months
with Norton the exact version number will be on the disc

Do they still do boxed disk versions? Only seen those silly cards and a download for stuff like AV.

I used to buy a new Norton disk every year for under £10. Back up data, wipe hard drive, reinstall OS, reinstall Norton with new disk, reload programs I want and update drivers. Worked well, like an annual tune up service. Now I just use AVG free which I think is better than the Norton ever was.
  • Spend money on Norton if you like but this is MSE - there are plenty of free AVs that are more than sufficient for general home use.

The best AV is yourself, think before clicking on that email offering you 40 million from your Ghana grandmother, check the little tick boxes when downloading general stuff and don't open up your PC to loads of torrent sites.

As an aside, I fix plenty of laptops infected with various things and they all seem to have Norton installed ? Maybe a coincidence and they are better now....

If you are really concerned then also look at Sandboxie (free :) ) which you can run alongside your current AV. Would also suggest running other stuff alongside AV (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Adwcleaner etc etc, again all free versions) and use your common sense.
