£6350 for new heating

I have warm air heating which I am replacing with a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 34CDi Classic and 8 radiators and have been quoted £6350  to remove the old heating unit and install the new heating with the boiler in the attached garage.

This is for a 3 bed semi.

A bit much or is that what it costs nowadays?

I wonder what SG would quote? £10,000?

I have asked for quotes from 4 firms, this is the first to quote.

    I did ask

It depends whether the gas supply is already connected....on the face of it I would say its a high quote if pipes are in place but not that bad if the pipework is not already there.

2 years ago we renovated a property and the central heating system came in a £6k but it was also allowing concealing pipes where possible and top of the range funtions...
This was in a house where previously gas only went to the kitchen for cooking.

BG was in the region of £4.5k but the independants were all around the £6k mark...the quote we chose was not the cheapest but the one that suited our needs best

Including removal and installation of boilers n radiators, it sounds about right. Although as has been said, get a few separate quotes for a comparison.

I might just get a quote from SG.

They are low down on my list.

Does anyone know what boilers they fit?

WOW. is it direct replacement for rads or does it require all new pipe work to them and main gas feed pipe work to boiler etc?

    Yes, it does.....

We only have ducts to blow the warm air out of all over the house x
So it would be to replace everything.... I would need 10 rads.....
Think I will stick with me warm air

Do you not know how gas warm air heating works?
    I don't have any radiators.

I have a big unit in the middle of a kitchen cupboard, doorless as required by SG, that blows out warm air through vents.

Mine isn't shown as it is too old.

    see above.

    I would stick with mine as well, however;

Mine is 24 years old and after having to add more ventilation I am now getting draughts in my kitchen where the warm air unit is.

Underfloor ventilation is now a big no-no, it needs to be to the outside.

We never needed to keep the kitchen door closed now we do.
During the night when the heating is off the temperature plummets in the kitchen because of all this ventilation.

The lounge could drop to 15 deg C but the kitchen drops to 5 deg C when it is frosty outside, if I keep the kitchen/lounge door closed during the night.

And all this with newly installed cavity wall insulation.

Also the flue through the middle of the house up to the attic is starting to show signs of corrosion where it exits through the roof.

That will probably be condemned at the next service, well it won't because I have cancelled the maintenance contract after SG increased the price again.

There is also the almost £100 of gas going up the flue in pilot lights every year.

And the loss of 2-3 kWh a day from the always on heated HWC.

Which doesn't contribute to the heating of the house in the middle of the summer.

And no one wants to buy the house with warm air heating, on the market for a whole year and no offers, yet the identical house up the road which had the warm air replaced went for £5,000 more than my asking price. And the garden was a tip.

And the £250 a year SG want to service it.

No local companies have the trained staff to maintain warm air heating, they need special training so it has to be SG.

I am also convinced this extra ventilation is negating the savings made with the cavity wall insulation as I am not using any less gas than last year, although the temperature does not drop so low during the night as previously, except for the kitchen.

So it is bye-bye warm air.

To avoid confusion SG is BG in Scotland.

Sorry this turned into a bit of a rant but I typed it up so it gets posted
