n my experience, you have to let the horse go in the direction they are intent on running. Do not stand in their way, else you will be hurt and an outcast for your stupidity in their opinion.
Stand back, you are not God ! You cannot help someone keep themselves safe from themselves, their mental and physical disintegration; their shortsighted, selfishness (here I mean the well-being of his children). He is, in effect an adolescent and fears growing up .... someone will always bail him out .......
I have a similar acquaintance, a loose female friend who now believes the life of a traveller existence at Glastonbury is preferable to that of a house owner/occupier (she is one), she lives income support, lies and invents her truth, does not wish to work (why should I work for nothing ?....is her belief) - her state of mind...... doing the wrong thing against paying is the right way; lying and being slippery with truth; is manipulative with all those she is in contact with where she can get away with it.... even her daughter -- is the clever way...... in her eyes. She give most of her energy to evasion of responsibility and wallowing when needed in depressive phases, but not when she want to go out on a 'girles night out'...
In her mind, I am too conservative, correct, stupid, slow, goody-two shoes and she is clever, ahead of me and the manner in which I conduct my life and payments for services.
Her daughter is on the way to suffer neurological problems too through her mothers unkindly influence and beliefs. I predict a fall-out in 5 years with her too.
This chap, your friend, will learn the hard way and his children for whom you, in truth, are concerned, will be the bearers of his actions, self-obsession and thought processess to his actions. Try to be there for them.
Do not lose youself in his up and down drama outbursts, concentrate on your own sanity, life and fulfilment.0 -

Fairly obvious, but to those not in the know, meet one of the board trolls.
Suggest you ignore them whenever possible0 -
