Is a dealer service worth it?

To maintain the resale value, I mean?
I bought a Honda Jazz in Feb 2014. It's due for its MOT now, and I might as well get a full service at the same time.
The car is a 2009 model 35k miles, and at the moment has a full dealer service history (I bought it from the dealer). I can't see into the future of course, but I don't think I will sell it before it gets to about 10-12 years old, possibly even older, depending on how it holds up. Would a car of that age be significantly more valuable with a dealership service history, or would my local garage be OK?
Just after some opinions.

If you are only going to sell it when its got a long list of problems that arent cost effective to fix then the service history is going to make no difference.
Based on what a 10 year+ Jazz is currently being advertised for on AutoTrader/ CAP's free estimator then a dealer service history is in no way going to make up for the additional cost -v- a local garage.0 -
At that age, no not at all.
For the first 4 years, it might add some value.
However I wouldn't trust a dealership to service my car properly, they have young min-wage apprentice technicians, being told what to do by some suit whos never gotten his/her hands dirty, who will have laid down impossible job times and targets.
This leaves these technicians in a position where they're just cruising along waiting for a chance to find another job elsewhere, don't give a damn about your car, don't have time to do the job properly and as a result end up cutting corners.
Plus, because they deal with brand new cars every day, when they get something in that's more than a few years old, they're far less likely to bother.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

That's kind of what I was thinking. I will probably only sell it when it becomes annoying and/or expensive to keep. In the meantime I do want to take care of it though, so will maintain services.
There's a garage just round the corner from my house, open on the weekends, they charge £219 inc VAT for a MOT and full service (76 points apparently). Might go for that, if only because it is super convenient.0 -
Shop around, £219 sounds expensive to me. I got my Civic serviced (full service) and MoTd at a local garage and including replacing a suspension drop link the bill was only £187. Without the drop link I'd have expected £150ish.
ETA - I'd say 80% or more of those 76 points will be simple checks you can do yourself - wipers, lights etc...0 -
I haven't paid for a service lately (new car, servicing included) but £219 sounds a lot to me, I suppose it depends where you live & it depends what they do. Look in the service book, most services are pretty basic.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

From the way you describe it, is that garage a 'proper' garage or a fast fit type place (National, Kwik-Fit, Halfords, Mr Clutch etc)?
If the latter, just avoid it, or we'll see a thread in a few days time from you asking whether the car really needs £1000+ of brake pads, discs, springs, shocks, fluffle valve replacement etc.0 -
OK thanks all. It's not a Kwik-fit etc, though they do have a few sites, and the reviews on google seems OK, but I shall take the advice on board and shop around.
I used to have a really good garage very close to where I used to work and MOT and services were so easy. Now I've moved and I have to find a new one I can trust, which is a bit of a pain, but needs must!0 -

Ask the local minicab drivers where they take their cars. They can't afford to be ripped off and need their cars on the road to feed their kids, so they're often the best people to ask.
Alternatively if you let us know the area you're in, someone may have a recommendation.0 -
I'd get this service and MOT done at the dealer as it's still under warranty just incase it needs warranty work doing.
Haggle with your local dealer to get the price down, I do this every year with my local main dealer, also see what deals they are currently running.
My first MOT with service was £172 at the dealer, the last one with MOT was £206 as it was a main service.
After that then council for MOTs and local trusted garage for servicing, up to yourself really. Although I'd stay away from the likes of Kwik Fit and Halfords.0 -

That's a point, I was just going to ask whoever I took it to not to actually replace anything that might be under warranty, and then take to Honda. But, looking at the Honda website, its £155 for the service and £35 for the MOT if done at the same time. Cheaper than the other place, though not as conveniently located.
I live in North West Surrey, close to Berkshire.0
