Paypal Info Please

Hi,
Not actually got anything to do with Ebay so more of a question regarding Paypal.

A friend of mine who owed me some money(£30) sent me the amount to my Paypal account using the 'send money to friends/family' option.

I received the money ok but 2 weeks later, I saw that this person had raised a dispute with Paypal for this transaction claiming it was an 'unauthorised' transaction.
Paypal asked me to provide proof that I had sent 'goods' despite the fact that I explained the whole situation to them and said there were no 'goods' involved to send!

Paypal have now reversed the payment in favour of this person and I have lost the money again.

Where do I stand with payments sent to me as a 'sending money to family/friends' as this seems a pointless thing to have if the sender can simply lie and claim the money back?

I suppose the thinking is family and friends wouldn't do that to each other, if the payment has been reversed then they friend still owes you the money. Paypal don't get any fee for that service so it's not really in their interest to conduct an investigation between friends

That's correct, I am now £30 out of pocket again. They had original put the transaction on hold while they awaited a response from me but within 48 hours they have gone ahead and reversed it.
Just seems pointless using this option as it clearly is open to abuse like this and as the receiver, I am not covered and they clearly favour the person who has made up this dispute!

It's not really pointless as I have used it many times without hassle, can see your point though suppose it depends on the 'friend' your using this with, what has your friend said about it?

The payment though is meant to be between friends, so PayPal will not intervene.

many of us used to think this way of receiving payment was completely safe for a seller, but it transpires that it is not. Unlike a straight PayPal payment where a claim for unauthorised use of a card can be defended easily by proof of postage, there is no such defence for a gift payment.

Your friend probably thinks that Paypal or his credit card fund chargebacks rather than them being recouped from the recipient.

I'd be asking your friend exactly what they think they are playing at, and considering if they were the type of person I wanted as a friend in the first place.

Spot on! It is your so called friend you should be complaining to not Paypal.

All paypal have said is that it was a claim because of 'unauthorised use of a card' .....the only response or evidence they would accept was receipts of postage for goods which I explained to them wasn't the case as nothing had been purchased.

Had no response from them other than for them to reverse the transaction.

Just cant believe that they wouldn't even take into account what I was saying when explaining that it wasn't for items paid for

Paypal don't want chat, they want what they ask for. If you can't supply it then you need to go back to your 'friend' and find out why they reversed the payment.

I think perhaps you have misunderstood what has happened.

Basically your friend has told his bank that someone has hacked him and a payment has been made without his knowledge or approval , the bank is obliged to refund his money whilst they investigate. The bank in turns reclaims the payment from PayPal who are once again obliged to refund the bank . PayPal then look to you - you either invoke seller protection (which you cant do) or you refund the money.

Obviously if this had been a. Legitimate payment received from a friend all you would do is go back to them , commiserate with them that their account has been hacked and ask them to repay.

You could always tell your friend how sorry you are to hear about the hacking, and explain that you will be approaching the police yourself and if he has any additional info that will assist them in finding out who the hacker is you would appreciate it.

Send your friend a polite email saying that there seems to be some sort of error, and the £30 she sent has been reversed, so could she send it again, or if it is more convenient you will come round tomorrow and collect the cash off her...

    Wait for her response...
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
