    Thanks for all the responses and info. Say for example I had actually sent my friend an invoice/request for money owed and put a note on it saying for example 'For money owed'....do you think this would have made any difference? Just seems as though Paypal are only interested if you have actually sold 'goods' and have proof of posting them even though this was a sale of 'goods'

    It doesn't (and shouldn't) work like that. You can't prove why you have sent money to someone or vice versa, even if you include a note. The only thing that you can prove is having sent a package that has been received/signed for.
    This is a matter between you and your friend, Paypal offer you no protection, nor do they suggest they do for the type of transaction you mention.
    Your friend has either had their account hacked, made a mistake or shafted you.

    It would have made no difference to a claim for fraud, see my post 10
