Hi all I have been working on my kitchen and now only have a corner cupboard and a small cupboard to do oh and the drawer of carp! That will get done next week as I have my GD this weekend. Then it's onto the paper work which I am not looking forward too and have been putting off for ages. I am still catching up with the thread, page 222 now.
I'm still loving the places I have done and can't wait till the whole house feels the same

Paper's hard - I started, did a big chunk, and keep going back and doing smaller chunks (but work on something else in between) - I've kind of sub-categorised my paper, I guess. We have our own company, so need lots of records for the accountant for that, a BTL (ditto), 4 children (inevitable amount of school and other stuff paperwork) and some investments. Plus I like looking in a paper instruction manual for some things (although I try and remove any non-English bits from it, if applicable/ possible) so keep those (sorted into 3 files - 'kitchen', 'garden/ garage' and 'everything else') My paperwork has reduced, though, and is neater (the KM'ed bits, anyway) I'm making sure that I don't mess up any fully 'done' bits of the paperwork category. We keep getting new bits though (m-I-l died last month, so she has her own file of paperwork (much reduced from the 2 boxes I brought back from hers to a small plastic A4 envelope file) and OH has a new contract, which has already produced an enormous amount of paperwork :o

Following up on the bit quoted above (which seems pretty well sorted!) I find that a quick way of getting started on paperwork is to collect all paperwork in one place, and have stapler, perforator, and paperclips ready. Then:
    - discard all envelopes and flyers
    - work your way through the pile just taking out only one type of document, e.g. bank statements. Put these in a pile/box/binder. If you have time, you can sort on date, if not, don't.
    - work your way through again, just for one type of document or category.
    - after you have sorted in major categories, e.g. 'house', 'pension', 'money', you can sort the 'house' pile into different subcategories, e.g. 'mortgage', 'building plans and permission', 'gas contract', 'furniture warranties'. These categories should reflect your life, and depend on the way your brain is wired.
    - resign yourself to the fact that there will always be a 'miscellaneous' box or binder (but not more than one!). Don't waste energy and time on finding a category for those. There shouldn't be many items there, but some you can expect.

I find it helpful to have binders with white labels on the back, where I can write exactly which category and subcategory is inside the binder.

If you find that you are consistently grabbing the wrong binder to look for a sub-category, take 5 minutes to re-arrange the binders and save yourself lots of time in future.

If you do it like this, you can do it 20 minutes at a time and still feel that you are moving forward.

Edit: Hi Jinny, I only just noticed that you posted on the same subject! Slightly different way, but with the same goal.

Morning all (just). I've woken up feeling a bit flat. Think I've already done all of the easy wins, so I'm wondering where/what I have energy for today. Bedroom isn't feeling as peaceful as I would like but that can't be helped for now.

Pretty sure this flat feeling is due to low energy. So a restful day is called for (grrrr). Oh well, some gentle kondoing is still progress

Paperwork is what I'm working on at the moment. Currently it's kids school / nursery work and paintings etc. I am keeping all the books that make me smile, reports etc and recycling the paintings that are just splurges of colour, the filled in worksheets etc. There is just so much of it. I have reduced the pile a lot though which is great news.

I think I'm going to give myself an emotional break by doing something meaningless like my toiletries draw this afternoon. Besides the recycling bin is almost full now and it doesn't get emptied until Weds next week :rotfl:
  • I don't have a shredder, so I really liked the suggestion that Jinny's dad made, to rip, soak in washing up water and make a papier mache.
I'll give this a try. Thanks Jinny
