VJ - how did your sons first day go? Hope it went well and he's happier about things now.

Hasn't started yet, it's Tuesday. I think he is ok - he is only going to do three a levels plus maths, which is what I wanted all along but there was pressure to do four.
Reminds me, I have to iron his shirts ready...
Not kondoing much at the moment as making most of the last of the holidays, back at it on Tuesday.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Hi all,
I am still lurking around the thread and reading everyone's posts with interest. Last week, I Kondo-ed the airing-cupboard at last - well most of it - there is the very bottom to do, will do that today.
I have already taken a bag of fairly-good but never-used stuff to the charity shop. Another large bag is awaiting the recycling centre. Everything looks so much neater and easier to find.
I have stored duvets sets inside their matching pillow case but there are lots of other pillow cases which tend to get thrown around a bit when someone is looking for a particular one. Am working on a better storage solution along the lines of folding end-up like t-shirts.
Keep up the excellent work everyone.

Made a donation drop off at local CS with my kondoed nail polish, some unused make up and toiletries. Glad to have a bit more out of the house even though it was only a very small bag. Hooray, I did the freezer inventory list this morning. We had more food than expected. Tonight's dinner is currently being defrosted. In the freezer I found 4 small packs of various mince meats (about 100 gram in each packet) so tomorrow we will be having meat balls.
Currently OH is out in the garage sorting through boxes and also flattening card boards ready to take to Mr T's recycling. OH & I work better on separate projects so I shall leave him to get on with the garage. Later this afternoon I am planning to do home made granola.
At the back of the kitchen cupboard I have found a big breakfast cup that a niece bought me in D-land Paris. Looking at the cup makes me smile but it's far too big to use so I have decided to take the cup to work to use as a pencil holder to brighten up my desk in the office. No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. In my local area we receive a couple of local news letters every month. In there I found an advert for a shoe box collection looking for unused / used toys (not electrical), hats, scarves, gloves & toiletries to be given to children living in poverty. Perhaps this is an option for those of you have had bad experiences of giving donations to CS.No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. I usually phone the CS I donate to, and tell them when I'm coming. I took 14 bags of clothes on Wednesday of last week, and on Friday I took at least 200 books, most cookery, craft and paperback fiction. As I don't want to overwhelm them I shall probably take the next lost of assorted treasures to another independent CS which sells stuff cheap, and it always has staff available to help unload. I was sorting out the top drawer of my bedside drawers last night at 0130, amazing how much ood medicines were in there - painkillers, indigestion tablets, creams and even prescribed medicines. Then I realised what time it was, and forced myself to stop, so I have to finish emptying those, and putting the spare deos and creams in there instead. I have to reorganise the storage to get my shoes more accessible tomorrow, when RL has finished taking over my life this w/e.0

In contemplative mood at the moment........goes with the time of year as I work in 'education years' so next week will see the start of a new year for me and I always make a few changes/promises/resolutions to go with it. Usually I will have just come back from a trip away and I would be getting cross with myself as I haven't completed/achieved certain goals I had set regarding decluttering and house organisation. This time I havent had a holiday away as such and the de cluttering - kondo style - has been slowly going on in the background since January
I did set myself a goal that it would all be done by this very day and truth be told it isnt but its no longer a burden - house is tidy and clutter is now confined to 2 rooms ( office and spare room) and what is stored in outhouses/sheds is sorted and boxed ready for its various destinations over the next few months. House is tidy, clean and under control and the garden is tidy and under control and gradually getting to how I want it to be......digging out some large stuff over autumn and winter and changing paths and beds also in the plan:) Everything seems quietly calm and not how it is usually at this time of year with a race to get things done before back to work/school and a pile of regrets at every corner.
I had the weirdest dream last night - a very cluttered scary hoarder type house featured with me wading through every room. Most of what I could see were my/our ex possessions.....some going back a long time. Through the window I could see what is the view from the bottom of my garden which is a few trees and open lowland scrub and mountain slopes but in amongst the trees there was a shadowy figure darting about - I didnt like it as it was quite creepy - I dont often have 'bad ' dreams! Anyway no idea what it was all about.......but weird anyway:eek:
I am not too worried that I haven't quite completed my self imposed challenge as I know its an on going process and it will continue to improve and as I have said what is left is easily dealt with. One goal was to get to the pint where I felt my holidays would be my own again and not spent on trying to sort out 'stuff'. I think I am there now:) Its been,so far, an interesting 'journey', for want of a better description.................however I would not have even started it had I gone to the book first. I eventually bought the book once I was well an truly in full kondo mode, but at a bit of a stalled crossroads. I got half way through and had to out it down. It fulfilled all my thoughts about self help books ( never picked one up before) I found her patronising, repetitive, devoid of empathy, too whimsical and lacking in credibility, to be frank:D. Maybe it just didn't transfer culturally or there was something lost in translationHOWEVER I have taken on some of the ideas and methods but adapted to suit my own situation and needs. I am looking at my possessions in in different way (folding knickers !!!!!!! Who would have thought it could bring so much joy
) and questioning my motives for keeping them - so something did rub off:p
By far the biggest motivator has been reading posts on here. Taking on ideas, chasing up links, doing further research. So thank you everybody and I would like to single out iQueen and Grey Queen, if I may,for a special thanks, for some of the most interesting, thought provoking and funniest posts:TBe the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Aww, thanks, hun. I'm blushing now.
Am at my parents' place for almost a week and am working my decluttering magic. Have persuaded them to let me paint their hall, commencing tomorrow; have been doing some prep today and have visited Nan.
How does this involve declutttering, I hear you ask?
1. The tumuli of coats hung on the hook will have to come out of the hall. Some of them may not make it back again.*fingers crossed*
2. There are two part-used large cans of white emulsion which I hope to finish up, gaining a bit of space in Shed 2 (this is a three-shed household).
3. I am hoping that the clean, bright new image in the hall will inspire other tidying/ redecorating habits.
:j I am soooo looking forward to starting tomorrow. :j
We have also managed to get the flap off the drop-leaf part of their wall unit closed for the first time in months and got rid off some carp and I have found a loitering pair of socks which need darning which I will do and get them back into service.
I loves me a bit of darning.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ - would you like to come here for a holiday
Igamogam - I'm taking this even more slowly than you, but I'm finding that generally things are improving. I've certainly found that reading here has helped me to be much more pragmatic about what I do and don't keep (although a lot of decisions will have to wait until this place is no longer a building site). I've also found that I'm thinking more about the logical place and way to store things (hopefully this will mean that as the building works are done, I'll make the right choices about what's done and how).
I'm finding that by focussing on keeping on top of what is already done, I can add to it little by little. In the past I've moved on to the next thing and then found that I'm having to work back through the stuff I've already done. So, for example, today in the garden I have focussed on making the bits that are already under control tidy, and then doing some extra working clearing the bits that aren't. So at least some areas look tidy and can be used!
I'm currently having the bathroom replaced, the loft re-insulated and the external paintwork done. And possibly the ensuite done if there are funds available when the rest is done. Other work has come up as a result of this, but is worth getting done while the builder is here:
1. Proper loft hatch with ladder will go in. This saves me dragging the grubby step ladder in from the garage and makes it easy to get up there. (Not that I plan to... but you never know!)
2. Replacing upstairs radiators - now the bathroom and landing floors are up to do the bathroom, it makes sense to deal with them and avoid lifting floorboards too many times. Although it will mean a certain amount of shifting stuff back and forth between bedrooms for access
3. Replacing downstairs heating pipework & rerouting some of the hot and cold water pipes. Some poor quality plumbing in the bathroom combined with a LOT of head-scratching over why exactly the pipes went where they did means that it makes sense to do this - and to do it now while the rest of the work is being done. I'd always been unhappy about the downstairs heating pipes being under the floors, as leaks can stay undetected for ages - and be difficult to find - so this was a relatively easy decision.
So far the pipework taken out of the bathroom has been replaced with roughly 2/3rds the original amount. And the old pipes are being carefully saved by the builder to offset the cost of the new ones. He has also kept back all the burnable wood when filling the skip, so that I can de-nail it and use it for kindling. 30 year old floorboards will burn nicely
The new bathroom (and the ensuite when it happens) is being installed with sensible storage, so hopefully will be a calm, easy to clean, uncluttered space. (There's going to be storage under the bath for kids bath toys and everything...)
