I know it sounds like hard work but i'd chuck the lot down, sort through it and rebag the stuff you want to keep and put it back but put labels on the bags. If you have chucked a lot you might be able to put all the stuff in one loft space.
That is what I did with the loft. When I cleared my aunts flat and my mum's house the stuff I couldn't deal with a the time was all put into our huge loft. We floored the loft years ago with a ramsay ladder for the boys to play when they were young and it was just too handy to put stuff in the loft and deal with it later.I emptied it except for a snooker table and huge train set and cleared and tidied it all. Kept very little just Christmas stuff suitcases and toys for the grandchildren to play with. I didn't find anything that gave me joy so the charity shops got loads.

Maman, I know what you mean about projects to give you joy, I love sewing and knitting but need a purpose.

Really, I think it's whatever brings you joy - find what makes you happy. Since I revealed that I can sew I've been asked to help friends with fancy dress costumes etc.

Thanks I've made costumes for school themed days too and thoroughly enjoyed that but DGDs are grown out of that now. I made a couple of Aran cushion covers and covered all my coat hangers, copying a Cath Kidston idea. That's the sort of think I enjoy so I need to get thinking.

But don't get me counting side tables :p

DH is currently painting the sitting room and I find the side tables (5 of them in there) don't bring joy but they are so convenient for putting drinks down and holding table lamps. I think I like having tables but not these particular ones.:(

Tipping down with rain here so a perfect day for kondoing. I'm thinking another overhead cupboard.

Michele, I think you're just going to have to bite the bullet and get started. My loft is difficult to access so I'd want to go up and down as few times as possible so I'd be bringing down as much in one go and sorting it as I had the time/room to spread it out. When we had our roof re-done and had to empty the loft we had a lot of DD1's stuff up there. I spread it all out in spare bedroom and just got her round to decide keep/CS/bin. It didn't take her long and even if you end up storing it for her at least you're only storing things she wants.

I'm lacking in chairs compared to you guys.

    1 3 seater sofa
    1 2 seater sofa
    2 computer chairs
    1 folding chair

Table and bench outside in the garden.

We don't have many either, one three seater sofa, two chaise longues, two computer chairs and a tub chair.

We also have one garden chair which is never used.:rotfl:

    Chair count...

    3 seater sofa
2 armchairs with matching footstools (large enough to sit on separately)
    4 dining chairs
    2 office chairs

We also have 4 patio chairs in the shed which are only pulled out if we have people around in the summer and the weather is too hot to stay inside. So needless to say, that doesn't happen much. :D

Oh and two stools in the bedroom. One is used by DH to hang unwashed clothes on (I should get him a clothes horse) and the other is only used by the cat to get up onto the high windowsill. :rotfl:

    Lounge - 2 + 3 sofas, 2 small footstools for occasional perching
    Conservatory- 4 tub chairs
    Office- 1 chair
Dining room- 6 chairs plus a spare
Kids chairs - 2 in house, 2 in playhouse
Garden chairs- 16 plus 3 camping chairs and 2 loungers

I'm actually ok with that - we do often have family round as we're in the middle with the most space.

Oh and DS has a beanbag in his room - actually I use it more than him lol

    This is fun! :j

I have sorted my clothes and accessories over the weekend and have managed to kondo just under a hundred items! That does include 30 items of underwear though. :D I have 2 large drawers free now! :)

Am now onto toiletries, sanitary and and travel bits.. I also tidied and organised my built in wardrobes and now have LOADS more space, got rid of teddies from my childhood, that was hard but necessary. (I kept two! :o ) All the big rucksacks and bags fit into one big holdall so that has gone into the almost empty loft. This means I can now fit the zbed in there that was sitting annoyingly in the corner of the bedroom. Apart from that all I have in there is two boxes of shoes, one of mine and one of OH's, and 2 carry ons that we use fairly regularly.

Plus the sleeping bags and other paraphernalia now fit into the drawers I cleared the clothes from! Think I'll have another drawer free after sorting toiletries, not sure what do do with that yet..

What I am finding so amazing about all this is the fact that I am known for my tidiness and organisation.. I am on my way to a whole new level now! :rotfl:
  • Thanks guys, I'm going up now to have a look and maybe make a start, I think all the bin bags of the kids old school work, paintings etc (the eldest 2 are 23 and 21!) are fairly close together so that might be the first cull!

Mrs Moneypenny - Privett usually roots very easily so if a neighbour is cutting their hedge just get some trimmings to poke in the ground to root - if they take its a bonus if they don't you havn't lost anything! That's how my Mum got her hedge ;)
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
