    Afternoon all,

I hope you don't mind me joining in. I am half way through the book and naughtily I have already Kondo'd mine and hubby's clothes.

I am moving onto books now, which shouldn't be too difficult as I only have one bookshelf, although I do have a large pile of magazines on it which I keep convincing myself that I will go back and read sometime. but as Marie says "Sometime never comes" and as painful as it will be to get rid of them, I have come to realise she is correct. I have had the magazines for about 5 years now and I have never re-read them :o.
They will all hit the recycling bin this afternoon.

The question I wanted to ask is this:-

How do I balance sticking firmly to the Kondo method but also being mindful that I am stony broke and cannot afford to throw out non joy sparking clothes or toiletries because I am having to "make do" while I am on my journey to becoming debt free.

I have quite a few bottles of moisturisers and body washes that have been past gifts and I do eventually start using them, to save me having to buy my chosen brand in a bid to save money.

Am I compromising the Kondo method too much by holding on to old jeans I hate but HAVE to wear because I cannot afford some new joy sparking jeans, and having to use a horrible smelling moisturiser because I have it and if I use it, it will save me having to spend any money on my favourite brand.

I am finding it tricky to throw certain items out as sometimes "something is better than nothing".

Has anyone else here Kondo'd whilst they are fighting to become debt free? and what are you thoughts.

    thanks all. xx

I have sorted some of my clothes that don't give me joy. I, like you, can't afford to go out and just buy loads of stuff-can anyone...anyway one man's junk is another man's treasure and all that. So I eb@yed some of the good quality clothes that didn't bring me joy. It means you're not just throwing them away, you're kind of getting something back for getting rid iyswim.

I have yet to sort my bathroom cupboards...and the similar products that have overspilled into my bedroom...and also the bag of toiletries my DD1 kondo'd a couple of months ago (and gave her discarded items to me)... I'm going to have to be ruthless too.
So far my t-shirt/tops drawer is sorted and so is my long sleeved tops drawer. I still have to tackle my jeans/trousers drawer, underwear drawer and wardrobes. :o

  • I think one of the benefits of this is that it makes you more aware of whether you really like the things you're using every day. It's not a case of rushing out to replace things, but recognising that maybe when you do replace them, you'll make different choices.

When we identify items we don't want/use/need, it's worth remembering that the cost was 'sunk' when the stuff was bought and can't usually be recovered. It's a balance between how much you'll save by using stuff up, against how much you hate it. I'm sure as you go through the process you'll find stuff you can eBay or Gumtree, maybe you could use those funds for buying new clothes or toiletries without diverting funds from debt repayment?

Do you really need to use the moisturizer? Maybe you can alternate between the one you like and the one you want to finish? I do that with shampoo; the one I like I use one wash, the cheapy/free one the other wash. (Or use the moisturizer you like on your upper body and arms - where YOU will smell them - and the other one on your legs.)

Maybe you can dye the clothes that don't spark joy anymore? I dye all my black clothes black again once a year. I need just one package of D.y.l.o.n. dye for 2 pairs of work trousers, 1 pair of jeans, 5 t-shirts and an assortment of underwear and socks.

Do you dye the clothes by hand? Or in the machine please?

Welcome siebrie, I haven't bought anything new to replace the stuff I've kondoed (apart from two dresses one from the carboot and one from the CS) both of which are brining me emmence joy. I've got a huge toiletry stash and am slowly working through it, I'm not kondoing any of that but have curbed the usual I must buy it because it's a bargain even if I've got 20 At home mentality of shopping I had.
I know it was referred to on here as primitive brain and higher brain mentality. I'd like to think the higher more logical one is winning now as the space being created by using up or gifting to the CS is bringing far more joy than a house being crammed to the gills with stuff.
Been having a very joyful day spending time with my DD2 and DGS at a baby group called natural play. Everything was traditional wooden or fabric toys, they were huge cardboard boxes and tubes and sand the children all had such a wonderful time. And not a piece of plastic or electrical gadget in sight.

Need to get stuff out of attic now then will clear some mags and papers and find those wet suits I want to kondo.

Half a dozen too large or unjoyful tops to the CS today:D, almost removed one from the bag before I left the house, but managed to be strong.:D

Waves to Steph:wave: Good point made already about alternating the nice and nasty products, I use my "posh" body stuff as far down as boobs and the rest on my lower body and feet, I do first wash with any shampoo that does not thrill me and the good ones for second wash. As for clothes, if you can just "suck it up" and wear what you have until circumstances change, it will be a bit soul destroying, but you won't be beating yourself up about wasting money. It will not be forever and you will be able to treat yourself to lovely things in due course. For years OH and I were as skint as skint things:(, but we came out of it and I think because of it really appreciate the better things in life, although we are still extremely canny shoppers and will wait for the right price for most purchases and the best deal at the time for more urgent things.:money:

Personally i would rather suffer with dry skin than wear body lotion that i dont like the smell of.... in fact i threw out another bottle of body lotion away yesterday that i hated the smell of. Good job i dont suffer with any medical issues though as i'd be seriously challenged.

Clothes, ive done it before, wore clothes i'm not keen after awhile i start to feel frumpy and it drags me down. Personally i'd rather wear the same things over and over again than wear something i dont like.

Question, newspapers with front pages about twin towers, queen mums funeral etc do they go in recycling or do you think the CS will be able to use them? Question 2 why on earth did I save them?

Landing is now a mass of junk I've thrown down from the attic. Job before Dh gets home is to sort it into CS or recycling.
I did sort of stick to paper as I've kondoed a rather large bag of dress patterns, complete ones that wouldn't look out of place today are going to the CS children's, nightwear , toys etc but the fashion that time forgot, ripped or incomplete are in recycling.
