Just revisited clothing and have filled 3 bags with unjoyfull clothes shoes and handbags.
Going to iron/fold/roll the laundry basket now and see if there's anything in there that needs releasing.

This morning I found myself looking at FULL PRICE items without any guilt at all. I didn't buy anything because I didn't need to, but I enjoyed the process of looking.

I'm getting so very close to being able to buy a few joyful items that will be worn steadily, regardless of the price - once I'm ready!

DH was looking at the sofa strangely yesterday and asked if I'd done something different to it. Well yes, there used to be between 5 and 7 cushions scattered across it. Now there are just the two we actually use in each corner! I also took down the massive piece of art behind it and replaced it with a smaller piece that brings me more joy. Deciding what to do with the larger one, I think it'll go.

I went to the local CS yesterday to be told that they were still not taking donations. DH had tried to give them some about 2 weeks ago so I was expecting them to have made space by now! They felt sorry that I had walked in the heat so took my donations anyway (thankfully). Makes you wonder if the MK phenomenon has increased the overall donation volumes? I wonder if CS managers are experiencing increased stock and decreased customers? ;)

I have definitely had less charity bags through the door since the book became popular! Used to average one a week, lucky to get one a month now.

Since my decision to only buy very few clothes, I find browsing clothes shops strangely relaxing. I think it's because I'm not 'shopping' as such, just looking.

I might buy an item occasionally (I bought something very nice for half-price last week) but I feel somehow that the pressure is off.

What I also enjoy is looking at new clothes and thinking of how I could adapt some of my existing clothing to customise it / make it more on-trend.

:)I've always been drawn to clean lines and things minus frills and folderols.

I grew up in a hoarderish house and hate the amount of time and stress caused by excess belongings.

It's an aesthetic preference that I've had since earliest childhood, and the mature understanding that if one is good, ten isn't better, and there are only so many hours in the day and so much energy in one body, and that I have better things to do with my time that shuffle Stuff around.

I guess minimalism for me means trusting that life will continue to provide what I need at affordable prices and that I don't need to have a lifetime supply of X, Y or Z stored away.

    :p Oh, and less dusting..............:rotfl:

    Damn! I forgot, again!

I meant to stress that Minimalism is whatever our personal concept of it is... whatever we consider is the least amount of Stuff that we feel comfortable with. It doesn't matter whether it's a mansion packed with Stuff, or a single room, with only a bed, a kettle, and carrier-bag! :rotfl:

Strangely, I was brought up in a comfortable, but religiously modest/austere family. Most of my life I hankered for tasteful, eclectic stuff around me, but rarely achieved the satisfaction that I sought. I obtained/inherited aesthetically pleasing stuff, but these things just became part of the unappreciated background, rather than well-sited, joyful gems. :o

Many years ago, I found myself yearning for the space and tranquility, which my 1950s home was designed for. I recognised that I needed a simpler life, simpler surroundings, and less. Kondoing has shown me that clutter is 'noise', a din, which distracts, prevents focus, and leads to manic, exhausting tail-chasing. :(

I'm pretty sure that my home is going to feel much happier, when it is no longer over-stuffed with so much modern carp. And that will make me happier too. :)

You're definitely right about the number of belongings, GQ. People are mostly unaware that after the first item (eg pair of shoes) the satisfaction diminishes with every extra pair. Before very long, every extra item obtained brings more problems than pleasure. This applies to everything, including income. :(

Kondo's the contents of my freezer! Found so many bread ends waiting to be whizzed to breadcrumbs so they've been Kondo'd into two ice cream tubs and the surplus is being made into a bread pudding & will be Kondo'd into DH ;)
Dinner tonight is some of the lurking stuff - 3 breaded chicken breasts - some swede mash & potato mash with some green beans picked over the last few days. I've pulled a recipe off 'tinternet' for Rhubarb & Ginger Jam & found a jar of ginger in syrup lurking in the larder so that will be a bit more as I've rhubarb from last year. Not really Kondo'd I suppose but at least turned into something more joyful :)
This thread has made me start thinking whether I actually NEED 3 freezeers. I have a tall one in the kitchen and another tall one in the garage and an elderly fridge freezer that DH keeps his beers in. I think I will probably wait until one of them dies and not replace. KM does start to make you think differently & I havn't read the book yet!!
Mrs M - do hope you make it out the other side - shout f you need us to send help ;)

Thanks silvasava, I made it out unscathed, in fact I feel much lighter and happier for the experience.
Haven't tackled the ironing and rolling yet but happy to note there is not much of mine in the basket so wardrobe should be a total joy to wear from now on.

Dh has been fed and returned to work so I've going to have half hour doing some needed stuff on the puter then I will get it all done.

mrs-moneypenny, you've pricked my conscience... I'm going to have yet another go at my 'maybe' clothes, which are cluttering up part of my bedroom - I refused to give them drawer-room, in case they got comfortable and put down roots! :D

I can clearly see that keeping anything for the future is pointless. Why waste space, time, and energy, on stuff that might never be used, and will probably end up in landfill? ;)

I'm seriously beginning to think that 2 dark indigo jeans, 2 black jeans and 4 silver grey tops, would see me through any situation. :rotfl:
