Where, in what and for how long?

I use this lady's system
It's basically a ring binder for each person
For current year only
Then a box file or cardboard box for archival years
I keep financial papers for 10years (paranoia)
Then a ring binder for current household papers
Morgage, council tax ect
Then a box file or cardboard box for archival
Kept for 10years
You can keep passports birth Certs etcetera in a separate
File but I just keep them in the relevant persons file
I do have a separate file for archival morgage insurance ect
I have another box file with manuals and guarantees in it
When I was Kondoing papers I found manuals for TVs ect I had got rid of years ago...crazy
Believe me doing my 'paper mountain' was exhausting
I had loads to shred and recycle
If you have a shredder spray a page lightly with oil or wd40
To oil the shredder.
I love my system now and whilst peeps look in there knicker drawers to admire the neatness..I love to get post so I can file away
I'm very proud of my line of files
All matching colours but different patterns of black white and grey....lovely
A friend of mine used to just shove everything in a carrier bag
So when something needed to be found the bags (cos there was a few)
Were tipped out onto the floor to be rummaged through like a treasure hunt!
I keep a basket quite near the front door near to recycle bin to deal with daily post.”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

Hhmm of course the next on the list is paperwork. So I made soup instead. Then cleaned kitchen surfaces. Then dismantled washing machine drawer and cleaned (horrendous sight!). I am definitely putting off doing the paperwork!
Will bask in a bit of post Kondo for a while I think!
Well done all.
Love hearing the Falmers stories. I had some too! Perfect fit. Much loved.0 -
I've finished the gift wrap category, I think I may be a giftwrap-aholic. There was a point where I realised that I was probably never going to send enough presents in my lifetime to use up my bow supply but they certainly bring me joy to look at them all, perhaps I will just start double-bowing gifts, or maybe just putting bows on random things. Would it be wrong to tie ribbon round the top of the bin bags as I put them out for collection??!
Obligatory Archers bit - I had saved the omnibus to listen to this morning. Thank **** that David has come to his senses and hooray for another person seeing Rob for who he really is. Now we just have to get the road stopped and send Justin on his merry way, preferably taking Rob with him.0 -

I had to go food shopping this morning - got out of routine with it being half term:mad: And I sat in the car park until archers finished:D
Just cleaned bathroom and konoed as I went along. OH and DD2 think I am mad as I keep appearing in front of them waving an item and saying 'does this bring you joy?' and if the answer is 'errum...' then my response is 'well if have to think about it, its a no so out is goes!' You see fellow kondoites I am kodoing by stealth. They have no idea of the method I am using, and as I go along I am getting quicker and more ruthless. In the past it has been a source of much strife I do not want any comments however well intentioned ( or sometimes not ) as its something I have to do myself in the long run. I am beginning to get a sense of renewed energy, freedom, lightness and I am sure its not the yummy coffee OH made about an hour ago - we are coffee geeks!Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Of course when you take the slips out of the envelopes and open them out they take up much less space.:o

It's taken me days to read this thread! Unbeknown to me, I kondoed my undies drawer years ago and have been samosa ing my bags for a couple of years too. I massively decluttered my clothes a long while back but went through them again and took 3 carrier bags to charity shop. I came out with a new top which I wore yesterday and it is lovely and bought myself a new pair of jeans from Mr S as I was down to 1 pair!
I like the ranger rolling but it won't work for every day towels. I have samosaed 1 blanket and ranger rolled another. I'm trying to decide which is best though.
I am pleased that I appear to have been decluttering correctly over the years as I do bring everything out to make decisions in the harsh light of day. I am hoping to have a new kitchen later in the year and when I have been designing my ideal, it has had lots of drawers rather than cupboards and I think it is going to be the way to go.

Oh and absolutely tie your bin bags with ribbonjust think of how much joy you will spread to the bin men!

If anybody wants to Kondo the amount of unsolicited post coming through your letterbox, I heard about this website yesterday:
http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/
Completely free and will get you removed from mailing lists passed between companies (you will still get catalogues from companies you have previously ordered from though).
You can also use it to remove previous residents of your home from mailing lists. I did this for the lady who used to live here and who passed away almost two years ago as we are still receiving catalogues addressed to her.0 -
Well today I have Kondoed the kitchen cupboards...all 8 of them! Three bags of rubbish, mostly food which was well out of date, two bags of food for the food bank and a large, very, VERY large box of crockery and baking tins for the chazzer.
I then cleaned the house from top to bottom and Kondoed the photographs again, reducing two large boxes to one small box, with every photo going in a file according to the subject matter. When I can be bothered to count them all I shall buy albums.
I'm another wrapping paper/stationary addict. I have Kondoed all my present and wrapping bits and put them in a large box but I think I need to go through it all again.
One more cupboard to do, which will take ages as it's jammed to the rafters with food and the family history stuff to be sorted. This will also take a while as there are tons of papers with little bits of research scribbled all over them, ARGHHH why did I make it so difficult for myself?

Alternatively dont tick/un tick the box which says can we send you further junk........I do this for emails too:) There is also a way you can get the postman to stop putting the blanket mail shot/ leaflet carp through your letter box too but cant find that at mo. Just beginning to get election stuff now:(Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Another very productive day...finally got OH to start on his top bedside cabinet drawer....talk about an Aladdin's cave! :eek:There was sweets, receipts, very old bottles of aftershave ( he hardly ever uses it), 4 pairs of nail clippers, business cards ( not his), batteries, leads, old shaver, old wallets, 2 plugs, 4 old watches and all sorts of other random stuff. It is now neatly organised:) and even has room for his current paperback that he reads every night. We also managed to Kondo the books and a old suitcase that was in the top of the wardrobe that we keep our holiday bits in....beach towels, plugs to use abroad, luggage labels, padlocks, flight socks etc. and a box that OH has had his "bits" in for years 'cause he said he needed them....turns out there was actually only about 2 things in there he really wanted! Another large load in the bin and a few more bits for CS & car boot. Bedroom now looks very tidy and still a few empty shelves in one side of wardrobe for when I need a home for other stuff. I did agree to OH keeping a few books ( about 10) that he says he really wants to read, although he has had them years and not started them yet. I said there was no reason why he couldn't finish them all in the next 4 months, he disagreed, but we will see. He spends so much time on his computer, doing nothing particular or useful and I am sure he could spend the time reading if he really wanted to read the books. I actually surprised myself, as I love reading and do read a lot, but I actually only kept 5 books, all been read already and will probably be read again, but most of the stuff I read just gets passed on. I really should get a Kindle!
Time to have dinner now and then a night of TV....Top Gear and Mr Selfridge, might give that new Matt Lucas thing a squiz as well. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
