I feel a bit scared that this is a passing phase and that I'll revert to being a messy after a while, please tell me that it won't be what happens,I really like everything in its place.....

This worries me. I don't want to revert, like you I really like things in their place, it's soothing. Is that mad?

As a reward for doing my bags I have ordered a little handbag organiser from ebay so that I can just move my stuff from bag to bag, never forget anything and avoid finding myself owning 8 half full pocket packs of tissues and 6 vaseline lip balm tins again!

I got one of those for when I use a "big" bag, but I have a few Kipling bags and of course they have lots of pockets so then I end up moving stuff around into the little pockets...LOL. They are very handy though. I think I could even have done with a bigger one.

I've been lurking here a while...I need help with this whole method. I have a very very cluttered house.I also have 5 kids at home and lots of pets and work in the day-ok so only part time but taking kids to school before and picking them up right after and making dinner etc all takes up so much time. I just don't know where to start. I have the book and have only managed to read one chapter. I did start on my clothes and have managed to make some room in the drawers but everything else I'm getting stuck on. I also have jumpers that I can't fit into any of my drawers. I have a mess everywhere. Millions of books,papers,toys... I feel overwhelmed :(

Baby steps, like someone else said further up the thread.
If you can find time to read the book first that might help, MK does seem to have a logical order.
If you can get OH/the kids on board would that help?
Don't try to do too much at once, accept that the 'stuff' took a while to build up and you won't get it sorted in a day.
Set small, realistic goals, and give yourself a pat on the back when you achieve them :)
    Lots of tea and cake!

    Lots of tea and cake,

I don't have an OH and the kids are quite happy living in chaos it seems. My eldest at home does try and help but she is doing A levels and also works weekends so she doesn't have a lot of time.
I really need to get this sorted ASAP as I plan to move house in May at the latest as the area I am in is getting worse and worse.

Just caught up on the thread - so many new names. How exciting.

I haven't really done much kondoing this week apart from one packet of photos but tomorrow is a new day and I'm going back at it.

For those who are feeling daunted by how much they have to do... Marie says before you start you need to envisage what you want to achieve by decluttering.

Once you make a start on a category you don't start putting things back or even thinking about where to put them until you've done the discarding. If you have alot of stuff you can break categories down in to subcategories - so if you can't face doing all your clothes then just start with tops.

Marie says for the magic to work this process has to be completed quickly and she thinks quickly is 6 months.

So those of you feeling daunted, don't be. Just keep chipping away at the categories but do them thoroughly. You'll get there. I think you'll have a phase where it feels like you're just displacing stuff around the house until you can deal with it. My spare bedrooms have bags waiting to go to cs, boxes I'm not ready to deal with yet, stuff to be ebayed. But the areas i have km' d are still tidy a few weeks later and give me the motivation to keep moving through the house.

I have rectangular thin hemp containers in my underwear and sock drawers already, got them via ravelry when someone was selling off stock in a shop. They have really come into their own and were always neat but absolutely support the kondo`d stacks that I am now forming. I went to bed last night but started rolling knicks and two spaces have gone into one because I am using the whole height of that drawer, I am constantly amazed. I turned my bras on their side and can now see all the colours at a glance, also releasing one space. So now I have two spare hemp areas in that drawer, each 5 x 10 inches. I am so pleased and will be able to put lots of hair bits into one and epilator and nail files etc into the other. I am awestruck about getting so much and so easily, into this one chest, 4 big drawers and 2 small at the top

Re jumpers and cardis, I haven`t really started with them but I rolled several and put them in a line in the bottom drawer. I didn`t squash the rolls but I certainly got more in than were in previously and best of all, I can see what I have and will use them esp the heavy cotton cardis and when they are used up then will only be replaced by my own lightweight hand spun ones, which take up far less space and lol, lets me carry on with my crafts

One day I will do my craft room but the best way for me to do that is to carry on using my fabrics and yarns, so maybe I will just shut the door on that room

Good morning :) Im much more of a reader than a poster, however I wanted to call in with a progress report. Im kondoing along at my own pace, doing bits and bobs in between shifts and being a nanna :D The kondoed parts of the house look fabulous, and are somehow staying kondoed as if by magic:rotfl: The dining table got shifted on ebay, and replaced with a much smaller one bought with the money raised. I now have a dining area where there was unusable space!! Im so happy with it, I call it my bistro much to the hubs amusement! I have the day off today, I may or may not kondo some more. I will decide after a cuppa and a cuddle with the cats, hope you all have a lovely day :)
  • Morning All - after a good night's sleep and catching up on your posts this morning I feel a lot more positive about the task in hand. I'm planning on a few hours kondo-ing this morning.

I'd forgotten that MK said that - thanks for the reminder lilahloo. So here's my vision:

To have a welcoming, bright, and well maintained (and low maintenance) house and garden where my son & I can relax, work and always feel comfortable having visitors (including clients). Also to make space for a language student lodger in box room.

I'd love to hear about other peoples' visions :-)
