Dorset
Most people have mentioned places on the coast, but don't forget the places further north.
I love Sherborne: lovely old town/shops/architecture: Abbey, School , Old Castle, new castle.
Dorchester - another old town - planned for my next trip.
Lovely villages: Cerne Abbas; Sydling St. Nicholas ... etc
Travelling between them all takes you through some lovely rolling countryside.0 -

Thanks, Dragonqueen. I was in Knaresborough last week. Didn't go in the castle, but went round the outside and down the steep steps to the river. Love the view from the top
Helmsley's nice too. Never found a decent place to eat, though, apart from the fish and chip shop ...
Would love to get to the Bird of Prey centre at some point0 -
Shropshire - Add on Shrewsbury, its a beautiful medieval town, just outside Shrewbury is Attingham Park (national trust) xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0

The World of Glass in St. Helens is worth a visit. And the cafe provides a decent meal and a cuppa.0

You are welcome Weareghosts :T0

Berkshire is missing, I think
Windsor - castle, gardens and nice town to walk around
Cookham - Stanley Spencer gallery
Trip along the Thames - some nice towns like Henley are north of the river and in Oxfordshire but you could look at it from the centre of the bridge if you are being strict.0 -
Hertfordshire:
Hatfield House - no first-hand knowledge, but seems to fit the criteria.
Verulamium Park and St Albans Abbey - the park is lovely, with lakeside walks at one end, and ruins of the ancient Roman city at the other. The Abbey is right next door, and somewhere between the two is England's oldest pub. There is a museum mainly focussed on the Roman city in the park as well, though AFAIK it charges admission.0 -
North and South Humberside don't exist anymore :j - some parts went into Lincolnshire and some became East Riding of Yorkshire.
Hull - you could try the Museum Quarter - includes Wilberforce House - free entrance.
North Yorkshire - Wharram Percy - an English Heritage site but free entry, a little trek to get to it but worth it.“You’re only here for a short visit.
Don’t hurry, don't worry and be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”Walter Hagen
