    Bedfordshire:
Dunstable Downs (a Yorkshireman once told me it was a little bit of God's own country lent to southerners) and you can add in Whipsnade Zoo if you feel flush, or walk along to Ivinghoe Beacon (Herts / Bucks border)
the Shuttleworth collection, if old aircraft interest you
    the Swiss Garden
you can walk along the river at Bedford, and if you want visit the site of Glenn Miller's last concert and last flight.

    Northamptonshire:
    Lyveden New Bield
walk part of the Nene Valley Way
    Stanwick Lakes
Fotheringhay (not much to see, but the pub's good)
In Northampton itself: the museum (boots & shoes!) the Guildhall, 78 Derngate (if you don't want the full visit, have afternoon tea there). If you are there for an evening, go to the theatre, and if you can, go to the Royal just to see the safety curtain (really! look it up!)

I am being very kind in telling you this. The "keep mum" association of Beds & Northants tells the guidebooks to write that we are not at all interesting and should be by-passed as quickly as possible.
  • These are some of the seaside towns I enjoy visiting in the South East

Dorset - Weymouth and Chesil Beach

East Sussex - Brighton. Hastings. Ashdown Forest.

Greater London (Hampton Court - see Surrey)

    Kent Broadstairs, Faversham

Surrey - Hampton Court. Box Hill

    West Sussex - Littlehampton Chichester

I think the original list is correct. Cleveland, Avon and Humberside stopped being counties in 1996.

For Greater London you've got a massive choice of things, just look at some of the London threads on here.
Oxfordshire (like Cambridgeshire) go to Oxford itself.
Gloucerstershire - Cotswold towns such as Bourton on the Water.
    Berkshire - Windsor
    Dorset - Lyme Regis

I don't doubt you over Cleveland but then the unitary authorities need to be included, do they not? Bristol is included on OP's list, does he/she also need to add Hull, Stockton on Tees etc.

Thanks all, the list is filling up nicely.

re counties - what is/what isn't debate. i probably have missed some ... like North Humberside. i think that still exists, but then Hull is separate ...
Have made some amendments to the list using a better reference :)

I forgot I have a National Trust Admit One card which would come in useful :)

Gardeners' World magazine usually has a two-for-one card in Spring for entry into some lovely gardens all over the country.

Arley Hall and Tatton Park in Cheshire have beautiful gardens. Buckingham has Stowe, and there are lots of interesting village churches around there. Hillesden is particularly grand for such a small village, only a few miles away from Stowe. There's a gorgeous garden there with lakes, open under the National Gardens Scheme. Check their website for dates.
  • Northamptonshire - Stoke Bruerne, a beautiful canal village with great pubs!
