Go for it, you'll enjoy it. It's quite easy really: pick somewhere you want to go, book some flights and accommodation - job done ;)

I'm off for a week in glitzy St. Moritz very soon to go and watch the (decidedly not glamorous) bobsleigh world cup races. It's just me and my hand luggage going - flight to Zurich, train from Zurich to St. Moritz, hotel right next to the track. Sorted

To me it just feels so normal to go somewhere on my own, no bravery involved.

I agree, it becomes natural and second nature to do it once you start - and I agree with someone who posted earlier that its a lot less stressful when you've only got to be concerned with your own passport/hotel booking, not those of your partner/holiday companions ;).

I'm planning on a few holidays and city breaks on my own over the next few years and I'm really looking forward to them.

My mother went travelling on her own to south east Asia and Japan in her 70's and had a whale of a time and then lived in Tokyo for a couple of years.

What an inspiring thread! I used to go to festivals and gigs on my own sometimes in my teens and I've a hankering for Northern Italy now. My family commitments seem to be lessening and as I've a DH who doesn't want to travel I could well end up having the odd long weekend away. I rather fancy going by train. Both for ecological reasons and because it seems more exciting to take a while to get somewhere and have a chance to see the places inbetween here and there but the pricing is crazy. It costs about 4 times as much to go by train as it is to fly. OK, I'm just an old railway fan as well. Suppose I'd better look into getting a passport - nearly 60 and I've never had a passport!

  • There is a great site called Thelma and louise where women post holiday ideas to look for others interested in joining them. Also charity fundraising events overseas where you can just pay for the trip without committing to fundraise are great ways to try new places and new types of holidays. I have tried both and had some great adventures and met some wonderful people and I am over 50. All you need is a sense of adventure and you'll be surprised at what you can do.

    Well Jel!

St.Moritz is the Monaco Grand Prix of the Bobsleigh world.

I follow the sport quite closely (despite never having been near a ski resort....) and would love to go one day.

Interesting fact: The St.Moritz Olympia course is the only 'naturally' refrigerated track on the calender. It is contructed from snow/ice from scratch every year. Make sure you get yourself to 'The Wall' corner, it will be spectacular!

    Enjoy
  • I'm a single lady of 52 ( but been 38 for a few years now, if you know what I mean). I took the plunge and book a solo beginners skiing holiday with Friendship travel last August and I fly to France on Sunday. I'm not brave enough to go entirely on my own and am scared to death of actually being on my own. 'Friendship' have an online forum so you can chat with people who are deciding on what trips to take and who may be on your trip. I have found 2 other brave travellers on my trip so I feel like I know them already.

DD, age 25, took herself off, on her own, to Tokyo (climbed Fuji), Shanghai and Hong Kong for 3 weeks last September, booked it all herself and had a fabulous time, met up with a friend of friend in Tokyo, friends of hers in HK and was on her own in Shanghai. I was the concerned parent, she checked in with the 'I'm alive' text on most days for my benefit not hers. Had not problems whatsoever.

Oh I know it's the only remaining natural bobrun, built by hand every year. It's the reason I go there :)

The tickets for the races are so cheap, it barely registers ... CHF40 so about £25 for the whole thing. And if you ever go there, the Hotel Bären is about a whole 50m from the start ;) (and this one's not outrageously expensive, though there are cheaper options but less convenient for the bobrun) It's a bit of a long train ride from Zurich to St. Moritz - pretty much 4 hours all in from the airport - but there are trains to St. Moritz from the main Zurich station every 30 minutes or every hour depending on the time of day, so it's fairly hassle-free (there's of course the option of a 30 minutes helicopter transfer, but that's slightly out of my budget :rotfl: )

I am from the Alps, but been living in the UK for over 20 years now. Bobsleigh has always been one of my favourite winter sports.

Fascinating and inspiring read. I've often considered travelling alone but never had the guts to go through with it, largely because I worry I'd be bored. If left to my own devices I tend not to do as much.

Silly really as I have traveled significantly with work on my own but it is always visiting offices around the world so not really a tourist.

I may try it this year though, inspired by this thread!
