I'm surprised reading some of these posts. I always think of going on holiday alone as something you do when you're young. I've often thought i wish i were more outgoing and had the courage to do it when i was younger.
I'm to old now, i'm 61. But reading this thread not everyone is a youngster.

Why? Lots of people much older than that travel solo

My OH's aunt does coach holidays all around Europe on her own. She's in her 80s.

My mum is 66 and she goes on at least 2 coach holidays on her own each year. She doesn't drive and isn't confident to travel around unknown places on her own so coach holidays suit her perfectly.
  • I met a lasy in Chiang Mail a couple of years ago- she was approaching her 70th birthday. She had flown in from USA to Bangkok, and got overnight train up Was planning to spend a while in Northern Thailand and Laos then go to a retreat in India

Another lady I chatted to at Heathrow was travelling solo to Nepal and was planning to do some volunteer work- not sure on age but she was retired
  • A solo holiday is very high on my list of things to do this year, I ticked off 'going to the cinema alone' last year and see a solo adventure as something I should definitely do!

One of my parents ( a singleton) regularly holidays alone in their seventies and reliant on a walking stick. Is off for a couple of months quite soon.

Dh's aunt went youth hosteling alone into her late sixties/ early seventies ( only stopped by a terminal cancer).

A neighbour of mine in late seventies used to travel Europe to see particular opera performances.

In fact I think I know as many older solo travellers as younger ones.

    Hello OP,

Congrats on booking your trip; you won't regret it! You'll gain loads of confidence from it and as others have said, you won't look back. I'm female in my early 30s and have travelled extensively on my own - when I was 25 I went to live in the Philippines. I've travelled through the far east; Malaysia, Singapore, China, India, Taiwan alone, as well as a little bit in north africa and of course Europe. I remember sitting on that plane out to Dubai and on to Manila with a mix of fear, excitement, trepidation and hope. I still get the same feeling if I jet off to some obscure place alone, it's great!
    Bon voyage & bonnes vacances!:j:j:j
Oh and for those who think it's only for the young; my husband's mum (61) has spent Christmas and new year travelling in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos on her own. She had a great time!
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)

    32 and mortgage-free :D

Wow, I think you're clearly a braver lady than I am! Currently Taiwan is the place I really want to go. Mostly for the food ;) Quite ambitious for someone who can barely get to Paris on her own but I hope one day to get there.

I went with Friendship Travel to a number of places when I was single. I also travelled to Australia on my own and toured for a while whilst also staying with a friend for a bit who had emigrated. The Channel Islands are also nice and they speak the language!

A friend did a trek to Everest base camp on her own at the age of 60 so age shouldn't be a barrier.
