The YouTube video about cats and dogs being skinned live., my EIGHT year old son saw this one today.., and was quite traumatised. You can use various software that's supposed to block inappropriate stuff for kids but things like this still slip through because you don't anticipate the words you need to input to stop all inappropriate vids.

We had a long talk about it, (we have two dogs too) and I did manage to calm him down but I wish he hadn't seen the video. I did tell him that we are lucky in this country so most animals are protected, and we can only deal with what we can control, so we can concentrate on making sure our own dogs are happy and well treated. But I can't just block him from You Tube. There's lots of age appropriate stuff he watches, and he loves anything about Dinosaurs and nature. Probably how he got to see this video. But its quite horrifying that he did.

I remember many years ago, seeing a ten year old with a gun in his hands being marched away to be shot by the other side's army. He was screaming in a way I've never heard before. I completely lost it because I knew by the time we watched it, the boy was long dead already. I was hysterical, my then OH didn't know what to do with me. He said 'just turn it off' and I said no, that boy is dead now and however upsetting it is, I have to bear witness so his death at least has some point. He and the crimes committed against him (giving him a gun, teaching him to use it, that it is appropriate to do this, and then killing him for using it) will be remembered by someone. I will never forget. It still makes me cry, I can still remember his face and his screams and when I hear of similar things going on (like ISIS) well, what can I say? But at the same time.., life goes on. It has to.

Get some new friends? My news feed is full of cute babies, fluffy kittens & sunsets. I've never seen anything remotely vile.

Facebook has very little if anything to do with friendship. The ethics of the company are very poor. Its not just about friends post as well. You can sometimes see unpleasant things in certain groups because a member posts it to be a troll.

It all depends on how you use it. I use it to keep in touch with friends so for me it is everything to do with friendship.

I disagree. If it wasn't for friends I wouldn't use Facebook. Ok there are a number of people I really wished hadn't requested my friendship on my friends list but that's ok, ive got them on my restricted list. They cant see what I post. Ive got a handful of people on block too.

On Facebook I get to see the pictures of my precious daughter in South Africa who uses it to post personal pictures as well as pictures of the charity she and her partner set up. Of course there are other family members too.

Just before Christmas I reconnected with a childhood friend. I haven't seen him since my first wedding back in 1980.

Ive been requested friendship from my hubbys work mates. People ive met once or twice and some ive never met.

The gruesome picture I saw was a group post by a troll. Facebook can be what you make of it though I wish they would get their act together as what they deem as unsuitable material.

The one from years ago was about some Ukranian kids who are now in jail for murder but they started out with cruelty to animals. The Dnepropetrovsk maniacs.. The one from a few days ago was about the dog/cat fur trade in China :( I looked at loads of rescue videos afterwards but still can't shake specific images.

Just can't get over it. Find doctors to be too short of time and will probably dismiss, but shall give a go thanks x

You can self refer for therapy without going to the doctors. Try
    http://www.trentpts.co.uk/

they operate in the midlands but if you are elsewhere they might be able to give you information about where near you offers the same treatment. They offer lots of types.

Sounds to me like you are getting into a negative thought pattern and then over thinking the images. You just need a cognitive switch you can flip to get it to move along :)

I think Facebook is quite vile really. I mean they should not allow all those videos of animal abuse and other questionable things. People do not need to see it, as all adults know what it means. Its just sick really.
They wouldnt allow images of child abuse on there, rightly so. Why then is it o.k to see animals being tortured? It downplays the severity of it and legitimizes it I think.

    Unfortunately animal abuse happens.

I think it's more offensive to try and pretend it doesn't happen by banning the images from appearing in social media. If more people saw how serious the problem was it may encourage better standards of animal welfare.

Oh god I'm so sorry he saw this :( you dealt with it best you could though by sounds of it.

And people wonder why I don't want kids - bringing them into this world? No thanks. Makes me think the sooner the human race dies out the better.

My mind started racing as to what I can physically do - like quitting my job and getting a big rescue mission started in China lol. I donate to lots of animal charities and volunteer for a couple (not so much any more as work takes too much of my time). It's the feeling completely powerless that upsets me more than anything I think. One of the posters above is right, I guess we do need to see these things sometimes to kick our !!!!!! into action.

    Hello OP,

Yes I image it is a mild form of PTSD. Spare a thought for the professional content moderators who are employed to scrub the filth and depravity from social media; FB outsource this dirty job to the Philippines and the workers need psychological conselling to deal with the things they see. There was a very interesting article on this kind of content moderation in Wired back in October. As they say, there is nothing new under the sun and if you can think of it, it's already been done (and plenty of stuff you couldn't even imagine too).

I deleted my FB account at the end of the year through a combination of anger, disgust and disbelief. I had to block people posting images of abused animals and then someone else who posted a video of a Mexican women being decapitated by the cartel (fortunately I didn't inadvertantly click on it, but the stiill was enough). Then, the final straw came on the flip side when someone sent me a message to say they didn't like a post I made as it 'was being horrible about someone' - that someone being Kim Jong-Un and the post I made said that I'd be happy to watch the much-discussed Sony film about his assassination!! So on one hand there were people posting highly offensive and distubing things, whilst others were getting offended at a comedy about a plot to bump off a brutal dictator! The craziness was enough, I deletd the whole thing.

I live overseas (Switzerland at the moment but the far east previously) and I keep in regular contact with my parents, family and friends through skype, email and texts. FB is absolutely no loss. So if you want my advice OP, come off the thing. And if you are still really struggling with the mental imagery, discuss it with your GP as unfotunately there is no such thing as mind-bleach..
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)
