  • A trustworthy tradesman that does a great job is hard to find. I suggest phone him and remind him about the cheque. You might need him again at some point..
  • If you want to use him again I'd remind him. Good tradesmen are hard to come by.

  • I would call him to give a gentle reminder. As others have said, a good tradesman is hard to find and he may have forgotten about it. I would not be happy if I had not at least tried to contact him.

I'd give him a call just so I could stop worrying about whether I should do anything or not.
  • Of course you don't HAVE to remind him, but I think you should.
You were happy with the work, it's his money - it could be just an oversight on his behalf that the cheque is tucked away somewhere , forgotten.
The RIGHT thing to do is tell him. :A

Im amazed nobody else has mentioned this
cheques now expire after 3 months, I should know as i tried banking an insurance cheque for £1800.00 at 4 months old only to have it bounce. It was a pita getting the insurance company to reissue

No advice here, just a story if what happened to me. A tradesman did some work for £100 and I paid by cheque. I didn't notice whether it was cashed or not. Over a year later I got a letter saying it hadn't been cashed, was out of date and he required a new cheque. I double checked with the bank and they said it was still cashable so I should cancel it if I was to issue a new one. That would cost £12. I wrote to the tradesman, asking that he send me that cheque and I would then reissue. If he didn't send me the original I would send him £88 (£100 minus the £12 to cancel). I have never heard back and he hasn't cashed the original. I'm happy to pay, but not to give a second cheque without confirmation I won't end up out of pocket.

Some not very nice peeps on this one. Shame. I'm guessing you wouldn't tell the shopgirl she'd given you change for a 20 when you gave her a 10!! The guy did a good job, you may need him again and he's probably got kids to feed....

Agree. Small trader will have a nightmare running a buisness by themselves. They have to do all the work and admin themselves. I always pay up. Transfer monies by bank transfer immediately. If a cheque was not cashed I would remind them as I'd rather the funds were taken when I have the money in the bank. A man deserves an honest income for honest work. If a guy did a really good job I'd go out of my way to sort it cos good relations with quality tradesmen is worth its weight.
