M1 advarage speed check

Why is it that in other countries they manage to work on Motorway repairs for a couple of miles, then the next couple and so on whilst in England they just cordon off 30 miles at a time.
And why can the not suspend the limits when the workforce they are there to protect (going by the adverts / notices) are not even there at night.
Nothing more annoying than having to drive up an empty motorway at 2.00am at 50 mph to protect someone who is home in bed.
Wifes car its not too bad but mine does not have cruise control so a PITATotally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -
And that's one of the beauties of cruise control - set and forget and you won't have any concerns about breaching average speed rules.
I travel the A9 from time-to-time and this now has 70 mph average speed cameras. I set my CC to 75 (which is a real 70) and simply breeze along; often overtaking people who slow for the average cameras and the old GATSO type cameras.

If it was dark and they've done the same thing as in the average speed section between Castleford & Rothwell on the M62, there are floodlights shining down onto the motorway where each of the average speed cameras are located. Could it be the glare from these as you passed that you interpreted as a flash?0

The first time I drove through an average speed check section on the motorway in the dark I thought I had been 'flashed' a few times by cameras. It was only repeating the journey a short time later that I realised that it was the floodlights that you mention.
Not all of the cameras have the floodlights set up, but when they do the floodlights are positioned to shine across the motorway, with something placed in front of them to minimise the impact of the light affecting oncoming motorists. Passing through the light cast by the floodlights can feel a bit like a flash.0 -
Because the normal speed limit is not a good idea with the temporary barriers & cones etc.And why can the not suspend the limits when the workforce they are there to protect (going by the adverts / notices) are not even there at night.
If there is an incident the higher speeds will lead to a worse outcome as the temporary barriers are not designed with withstand them. Also, if you went through the barriers there could be holes, works equipment to hit and higher speeds would make the crash worse again.
Keeping the 50 limit when there are no workers about is actually done for a good reason.0 -
The M62 has variable speed cameras on the gantries that I found out when I went down there last November. Fortunately I didn't get any tickets.

They do work through the night, remember the section you look at you pass in a few seconds. And that's one of the beauties of cruise control - set and forget and you won't have any concerns about breaching average speed rules.
Except there is a section of the M5 between Droitwich and Lydiate Ash, northbound it's 50mph then 40mph and the 40mph section looks clearer than the 50mph secton, nice little earner if a driver is not full attentitive to the signs.0 -
