  • What do you mean 'jumper wire'?

a cable going from one terminal to another inside the 3 way switch, im assuming its for controlling the upstairs light which also has a switch upstairs.

is the faulty switch a dimmer? If so, then it might have given up the ghost.

Might also be the live feed from the upstairs switch feeding the other lights. Have you checked the wiring to the upstairs switch?

I have and that's also fine.

I took off the 3 way switch this morning, double checked the wires and put it back on and the lights started working again.. thought that was it fixed, maybe loose wiring, came back home after work tonight and they had stopped working again...took the switch off and been wiggling the wires but nothing.

there's one wire going into com1, from there a jumper wire into com2, and a jumper wire from com2 to com3...the one going into com1, is that the live wire then?

there's no loose wiring, but its weird how it came on again for a few mins, maybe loose wiring behind the walls then? the wires disappear behind the wall, there's no connector block or taped wires or anything. just wires going directly into the switch.

im still tempted to swap the switch for a new one.
  • have you or anyone done any work on any off the other light fitting or switches in the house

Sounds like there is a break in the circuit very near to the switch. Maybe a joint a few inches back perhaps? Is there another switch backing onto this one in the next room?

yes there is, 2 switches in the room behind, which is the living room, however both those lights work fine.

think ill just leave it to the electrician if he ever turns up.
  • As said before it could be a break in the light circuit. It's probably wired as a spur rather than a ring so it's worth looking at the lights that might be wired immediately before the faulty one.

Check all the connections at lights themselves (one the ceiling) as these can come loose due to vibrations from people walking round upstairs. Check all of them even of they appear to be working.

there is no such thing as a lighting ring.
