Morning chums I have the diet nurse this morning for my weigh-in.I go once a fortnight and she is lovely and supportive. She says be realistic about what you want to lose.

I will never be the skinny size 8 I once was 50 years ago and I am happy to lose a lb or so every week to ten days .She also tells you to be 'kind' to yourself if you have a day when something 'naughty' just cheers you up.After all miserable people won't lose weight, they will just give up.I have lost almost 2 stone in just over a year and will carry on eating sensibly three times a day and pile up with fruit and veg.I no longer eat bread only crackers and have philly or soft low fat cheese on them instead of butter. Low fat pate with sliced cucumber and tomatoes and a bowl of HM soup is pretty filling for lunch.Porridge is usually breakfast as its slow release energy so stops you feeling empty mid morning.I only rarely treat myself to a little chcolate and then its usually perhaps on a Saturday night as a treat

Puddings now are low fat natural yoghurt with chopped apple or bits of fruit mixed in.The biscuit tin is almost out of bounds, now and again I will have a cuppa and TWO ginger nut biscuits not the handful I used to eat :):):) (my secret pash is gingernuts :):):)) I gave them up for Lent and now only eat them as a real treat with a cuppa.I do drink gallons of ice cold water and the weight is slowly going (perhaps not as quickly as I would like :)) but its not returning which is best of all.I am also walking more as I am training for my Race for Life in July and have mapped out a route that's exactly one mile round trip from my front door (and it goes nowhere near to the shops :):):)) Once I have got to the position of one mile comfortably I shall extend it by half mile increases until I am up to three miles .

This is what my DD did in April, and she ended up doing a 6 mile walk to raise money for a little girl locally who is very poorly at the moment

MY DD had never walked further than from her house to her car so I was very impressed with her.

Losing weight is the bane of a lot of womens lives, as we would all like to be slim and more active ,but as my nurse Lorraine says do it for you ,and no one else.
If you want to feel better, and by doing that you want to lose weight then do it for what ever reason you want to, and not because society expects you to look waif-like.
Its what makes YOU happy not other people that matters.

By the way my diet nurse costs me absolutely nothing, and she is fantastic and never criticises if you haven't dropped several pounds ,she gives you the encouragement to carry on regardless.

U3A annual yearly voting meeting this afternoon but after all the blah we have a talk from someone on Kent villages which will be nice
    onwards and upwards chums :):):)

    Hi all :j

Thanks very much for all the dietary tips - I'm hoping that this fancypants 'do' is the spur I needed to lose some weight, I too will never be waif-like - never was - but I was aware I'd been creeping up gradually over the past year or so. TBH yesterday wasn't so difficult, although I don't think I could have resisted friends bearing goodies - it would have been so rude to refuse Cheerfulness :D Plus I think you said you were suffering from illness, also not a good time to deprive yourself..

Funnily enough I feel slimmer this morning - obv I am not - but resisted temptation to weigh myself. Plenty of energy too! I have done SW in the past but it never seemed to work well for me - did for my DD though - one reason is that I think I already eat a very low fat diet (other than the odd dessert:D) due to a fat intolerance - so the changes required don't have the impact they do on other folk. Anyhow I will try to keep on the straight & narrow now & be accountable. I am doing it for me, no-one else really as I don't really know anyone at this do & care less what they think of me. However, I do want to fit into some nice clothes that I already have, so that is the spur.

In MMM news I have been outside & planted the living leaves as promised, however they were barely alive so I'm not expecting a miracle....will get some more healthy ones to augment these in case they don't take. Did consider posting a pic to compare/contrast with Silvasava to give you all a good laugh but haven't the technical skills required!

Also MMM another foray into room of absolute doom (known as Narnia by DD) & found: more shoes (!), an ice cream maker x 2 (!) - plus a pair of trousers for DH that need shortening but are brand new.... Well I have the trousers, the scissors, iron, sewing machine (& look away now, the Wundaweb) but have failed so far to do the job & had conveniently forgotten about them. Any tips from you skilled MMMs??

Off out later, to the dentist - must be the day for it - & lots of £££ going to be spent I am sure. A year ago I had a terrible tooth problem & had to endure a week of pain despite the attentions of 3 dentists & a visit to A&E....you can see why I'm not so keen :D Anyhow, something has to be done & this is the first step (again, prompted by the wedding!).

After that appointment we are near to a small shopping centre, which I don't like much but it is opposite the offices where DD works & as atm we pick her up it makes sense to stay there until it's time for her to finish, plus we will probably eat there too. I won't have a dessert though!!

Enough woffle, hope you enjoy the day, it is sunny here which doesn't happen so often, so make the most of it if you have it.

Glad your DB has his overseas probs sorted Vhalla - did the idea of a Northern meet not get off the ground? :D

sashanut One way to cut the calories without really noticing it is to eat fish in stead of meat for a couple of weeks. I managed to get through 3 weeks of eating fish at two main meals and lost quite a bit of weight yet I did not repeat the same fish. You can't do that with meat. Fish has considerably less calories yet if still fills you up as much as meat.

Sashanut - my leaves looked very sorry for themselves after I'd planted them but give them a good water and they should perk up considerably within a week to 10 days.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

    Hello again, Everyone,

Well, the sunshine has a lot to answer for! I painted some of my newly acquired trellis - but still some way to go, trimmed all the grass edges (with kitchen scissors because I've nothing else at the moment) and there are a lot, planted out my basil and the growing lettuce (thank you for the reminder), decided to cart a load of bricks and edge some of my paths, did a little bit of light weeding and washed the shed windows - no wonder I'm stiffening up!

Anyway, before I seize up completely, here's yet another recipe for all you ginger lovers.

Gingered Pork Balls with Peas - serves 6

4 garlic cloves, 450 grams minced pork, 5cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped, bunch of coriander, finely chopped, salt and pepper, egg, 2 tbsp. plain flour, sunflower oil, 225 grams mushrooms, 2 tbsp. sesame oil, 450 grams frozen peas, thawed, 3-4 tbsp. dry sherry, 2 tbsp. soy sauce.

Finely chop two of the garlic cloves and stir them into the minced pork with the ginger and coriander. Season with salt and pepper and stir in the egg. Make the pork into small balls about 2.5cm in diameter, rolling them lightly in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. Heat a little sunflower oil in a heavy-based frying pan (use the minimum you need to prevent the balls from sticking) and fry the pork balls until golden. Remove the balls to a warm dish.

Chop the mushrooms fairly coarsely so that the pieces will retain some bite, and finely chop the remaining garlic cloves. When all the balls are done, pour away any oil that is still in the pan, leaving just a tablespoonful. Add about 1tbsp sesame oil, the garlic and the mushrooms and fry over a moderate heat until cooked. Pour over the balls. Add the remaining tbsp. sesame oil to the pan and tip in the peas. When these are hot, pour them over the balls and mushrooms. Pour the sherry into the pan, cook for a few seconds until reduced slightly, and then pour over the pork balls. Season with soy sauce and serve with rice or noodles.

I forgot to say this morning, all went well on my final visit to the dentist's yesterday, so I won't frighten anyone at Jan's!

    Have a good evening, Folks.

    Viv xx

That Gingered Pork Balls recipe sounds lovely Vhalla and I'm sure would be easily adaptable for those on a weight loss journey.

Trying hard to minimise myself too these days. I was diagnosed as diabetic just over a year ago and it was very much the wake up call I needed. Using SW principles but adapting them to be careful of carb portions I initially lost 1 1/2 stones. Unfortunately I've begun to be a little complacent and have allowed 1/2 a stone to creap back on. Ideally I want to lose another 1 1/2 stone then I'll be in the "healthy" BMI range. On the plus side my blood glucose levels are good and I am considered to have good control of my diabetes - it's been a steep learning curve but you know what? I think it was the kick up the bottom that I needed to take better care of myself.

Just had a version of The Hairy Dieters Creamy Prawn Korma recipe and can recommend - only in the spirit of make do ours was a Creamy Squat Lobster Korma as DD1 had given us a bag of squat lobster tails as she had too many! (given to her by a friend) - wasn't going to look that gift horse in the mouth. In the past I'd have had at least 2 helpings and a mountain of pilau rice, these days I stick to one portion and no more than 2 tablespoons of brown rice to go with it. (Brown rice doesn't spike my blood glucose whereas white rice does).

I have had a shocking lazy day today, apart from 5 loads of washing iv'e done nowt. Not doing much to the garden if we are moving and have run out of compost to pot stuff up to take.I have washed all the bedding from the 2 beds which I sold and have left the building.Washed 2 duvets and one bagged up for Mr V's work friend who breeds dogs and uses them for dog bedding.

Lyn I do hope you are feeling better now. When I am out of sorts I am better in my own company in the garden or on a project.

Sashanut,I think jackie O's diet nurse talks sense.I lost weight for me,mainly because I love clothes and had masses which were too small. In the end they were too big so i sold them all on eeeeeeeeebay last year.I am trying to not buy much to replace them as it's so expensive.Trouble is I have to avoid charity shops because I am now a size which is easier to find than when I was bigger.

Silvasava i bought growing leaves when I went on my jaunt last week after you had mentioned them.Yours look great,I am just putting mine out in the day at the moment as we are so high above sea level it gets very cold at night still.

Viv I am up for a jaunt out any time. The London one is just out of my comfort zone for driving,I am a country bumpkin. And as I have no income of my own I feel like It's money I shouldn't be spending at the moment.

The boiler engineer at the cottage has found some other part which needs replacing so he will be back tomorrow.

Tomorrow I am going with Mr V in the car as he has got a meeting,I can have a walk round whilst he is busy.I do not need anything but I still have £10 eeeebay money left for emergencies only!Vx
