I hated that Sing Something Simple as well. Goodness, just the mention of it brings back the memories of being sick in the car! We always visited my grandparents, and that was always on in the car on our return journey home. I wasn't a good traveller, and was always throwing up. I've now got the intro theme in my head, and it won't go!0

Weirdly, even though it was aimed at even older people than Sing Something Simple, I preferred Charlie Chester's programme.

When it first became a problem for me carrying things down the stairs, due to arthritis, I used to fill a pillowcase with washing. I could get just the right amount in to make a load. Trouble with that was sometimes it came open and clothes were everywhere and I struggled to pick them up.
Drawstring bags are great because you can pull them tight and they just get thrown in the wash with the washing.

I love drawstring bags, had a lovely bit of vintage fabric and made, bags for my ST hands on the back of my bathroom door who would know and one for my travel hairdryer...As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or

What was it about 'Sing Something Simple'? It used to make my flesh crawl, it was so dreary! My laundry basket (second hand) came with an inner bag with drawstring which, when it's full, means I have a full load for the washer and I can hurl it down my crooked flight of stairs!
Here's a good veggie recipe from Jane Grigson's Vegetable book. I've scribbled next to it ' excellent, used courgettes instead of tomatoes. From Provence, in the gypsy style. Apparently Boumiano is the Vaucluse dialect word for bohemienne.
Boumiano
1 pound ripe tomatoes, 1 pound aubergines, unpeeled, salt, 2-3 tablespoons olive oil, a fat clove of garlic, 8 anchovy fillets, heaped teaspoonful flour (not tbsp.), 2 tbsp. milk, pepper, sugar, breadcrumbs, extra olive oil.
Cut the tomatoes across, sprinkle the cut sides with half teaspoonful of salt and turn them upside down in a colander. Cut the aubergines into 1cm dice; put them in another colander and sprinkle them with half teaspoon salt. Leave the vegetables to drain for an hour, then pat them dry.
Heat two tbsp. oil in a frying pan with a clove of garlic left whole. Put in the vegetables, stir them about, crushing them down as they cook, until they are soft. Add the extra spoonful of oil if necessary. Meanwhile in a small pan, crush the anchovy fillets in a little of their oil over the heat. Stir in the flour, then the milk, to make a savoury roux.
When the vegetables are reduced to a lumpy stew, without wateriness, but nicely moist, stir in the anchovy mixture. Taste and correct the seasoning, adding pepper and a hint of sugar to bring out the flavour of the tomatoes.
Turn into a gratin dish, sprinkle with a layer of breadcrumbs and drizzle a little oil on top. Bake at 180-190 degrees/gas mark 4-5 until golden on top; or place under the grill.
I've a treat in store tonight, my friend has recovered from her migraine and is cooking for the tribe - Harrods and Fortnum and Mason used to clamour for her pates. She catered for my son's sit down wedding meal for forty last year; did canapes for starters, gave a choice of three mains, and two desserts and would only charge me the cost of the food which was £200!
Must do an early stint on my rug, Another recipe later.0 -
Just had a quick catch up as my mouse decided to play silly b**gers & highlight or move things - amazing what happens when you turn it off and on again after 2 hours of trying allsorts - Grrr.
GQ I had some skates for my 6th birthday & I loved it so much my Mum & Dad bought me a pair of Jacko Skates for Christmas. They are extendable with screw clamps to hold on to your shoe and roller bearings- luxury. AND I've still got them:eek:
Borrowed DS! steam mop earlier this week but didn't get on with it. Prefer my Lidle one - I use one pad for cleaning & a dry pad to go over after. Dries in minutes with no streaks so I've saved myself £40.00
Cold, grey & miserable here & I've got to go out to the gym& decide what to have for tea tonight.

JackieO - as for having babies; my mother tried to tell me the facts of life when I was 11 (she was a widow) and I was horribly embarrassed for her. Funnily enough, when I told my super-intelligent daughter when she was 5 (because she asked me) she looked me up and down and said 'you're joking'. However it must have gone in as she was talking to her grandmother a few weeks later and volunteered that she knew where babies came from, when her grandmother asked for more details, she said, ' you go to the hospital' - 'is that it', said grandma? 'No, of course not' came the withering reply, 'you have to take your knickers off first'!
