Hopeful I suppose the only way you can look at how much money you need in retirement is to work out what you spend now, to have all of the things you need, and some of the things you want. Remove the mortgage cost if you plan to have that paid off, or add it/increase what you pay to it initially as necessary, and then think in terms of inflation, which whilst hard to gauge, is only going one way.
There are some calculators online which allow you to predict retirement income required. I had a heart attack when I first started working in financial services and realised that for every £100,000.00 people put away in a pension, an annuity would give them £6000 a year. Hardly seems like anything and is far more than I can hope to accumulate personally. Thankfully the reforms that have come in recently are making things far simpler and making annuities a choice, amongst better options! Don't forget assets can be sold and property downgraded etc, but it is surprising how many people say that they will pay off their mortgage pre-retirement by selling and downgrading and then just don't want to when they get there because the prospect of a retirement flat or a much smaller house is depressing to them.
Sorry, rambling on and not very useful with concrete figures really. One thing I can say, working where I do, is that it is a very personal and unique thing for each individual. We all have different goals, medical and financial needs. Potential life expectancy plays a huge part in some peoples plans! They literally gamble on dying early which frightens the life out of me.

That's me officially in Back of Beyondsville then...as haven't got one anywhere near (as per my suspicions). Been scanning Rightmove re Monmouth housing and got as far as houses up to £270,000 and still not found a reasonable one yet....(ie as dear as where I came from....).
Oh well.....just as well its possible to buy a lot of food by post these days....:rotfl:
EDIT: Just scanned Cowbridge on Rightmove and the cheapest possible is a nice-looking place at £225,000 (but its a flat!)...back to check out detached houses.....
By now am regarding presence of local Waitrose as litmus test for "My sorta area....but I cant afford it".....0 -

A waitr0se is coming to haywards Heath soon but apart from the free tea I shan't be crossing the door! A strange town which has mr S, a large co0p, m&s and an Iceland but no Al00 or lid0 which would really make a difference and fill the huge gap! One day ladies and gents, one day.
I am more back on form now after Lilts helpful post and a quiet evening before early beds. We are all in the same boat and ultimately things will be grand. I too find it scary that some people rely on dying young. I'm going to keep going to a hundred and then have a small rest!! After that I shall see. As long as I have books read and friends all will be well!! Nite all! XxWith family, friends and pets (or any combination of them) life will be fine!
