Bank charges

  • Was it Natwest that changed how often they send out bank statements, if so I can see how you could forget about an account if you get one or two statements per a year. But wouldn't the bank of got in contact with you via a phone call, text message or letters to say during this x amount of period you have been charged x amount of £.

I don't bank with Natwest but I would recon they would of tried to contact you with a repayment plan as I'm sure there a rules in place to stop charges being more than the debt.

If a customer thinks their bank's charges are unfair they can avoid them by managing their account efficiently and not going overdrawn etc.
They can do this regardless of the charges being fair or unfair.

Nope, they wouldn't of contacted anyone. Though they would have sent statements and very likely also have attempted to contact the account holder by other means.

    Albeit not in OPs case.

T&Cs are rarely ever fair, but being unfair does not mean you can ignore them, particularly if it is no longer in your favour, nor can you then choose not to stick to them as a direct result of forgetfulness and\or accumulation of the debt.

There has been a law against unfair terms for the last 15 years so if you find some unfair terms, you can take appropriate action.

Well, in fact it's the OP who is subsidising free banking of many other customers (including mine). Not that I am saying that I am unhappy with this.

Only if he actually pays the charges. Do you think that he should be allowed to borrow money and not pay anything? If so then those of us, like you, who currently manage our money properly and pay nothing will find that the banks will be charging us instead.

No, but £1K in charges seems too much to me. If it was, say, over 3 years, it's 91% in APR terms.
  • The OP has not returned!

Might still be recovering from a special mix of turkey, sprouts and alcoholic gravy etc.
