Bank charges

wonder if anyone can help,

i had a natwest bank account with an overdaft of £200, after forgetting about the account i have now realised that there is now a £1200+ debt on the account through bank charges.

does anyone know if i can get these charges voided or atleast lessened?

i would appreciate any advice there might be out there.

Generally, the only you can do is to ask.
    MSE article: Bank Charges Reclaiming

As a side note, it's hard to believe that one can simply "forget" about an account with £200 debt in it and ticking.

The bank is not at fault here. It is your responsibility to manage your money. It would be unfair on everyone else if they waivered the charges in my opinion.

OP Why should other customers subsidise your mis-handling of you account?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    Come on...
Are you saying that charging £1K worth of charges for £200 debt over a few years is fair?
    Moral/fairness doesn't work here.

Well, in fact it's the OP who is subsidising free banking of many other customers (including mine). Not that I am saying that I am unhappy with this.

i have to pay the price if my account is overdrawn and so does everyone else. It is specified clearly in the terms and conditions.

You used the word 'unfair', didn't you? So are you saying that all charges are fair as long as they are specified in the T&C?

The fact is, OP will have to pay this debt back, "I forgot" does not get OP out of paying the debt. How anyone can simply "forget" is staggering.

If a customer thinks their bank's charges are unfair they can avoid them by managing their account efficiently and not going overdrawn etc.
