You make a claim to mydeposits for the full amount. If he contests it, go to arbitration. Have a complete inventory (check in and check out) plus photos to submit to arbitrators.
If he fails to respond to mydeposits, follow their 'single claim' process - takes longer but you'll get the deposit eventually.
Did you get a crime number from the police? Don't get fobbed off with 'civil matter'. Insist they take a statement & issue a crime number "for insurance". ask to speak to senior officer if fobbed off again.
Document everything he owes/ broke, stole.
Claim on landlord's insurance.
Check the rubbish for paperwork clues: address for his work, friends, family etc

It was "funny" because they sent down a PC that had just a similar but much worse situation. His story (14 months no rent, damaged house, cost him £20000 in total) was so much worse than mine, I actually left thankful that at least the tenant had left!! ha He also gave me good advice (like the landlord's insurance for the goods - I had forgotten I had that) I didn't get a crime number but he gave me his card.

EDIT: crap - I'm rubbish, I just looked at the card he gave me and there is an incident/ref number on there.0
