You could be right. I was living in Stanmore at the time using the one at Hatch End so that puts it as 1996I think it might have even been longer than 10 years ago... Nearer 20 years I think!! Makes me feel old...This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
It's brilliant.
Let's you know your exact bill before you go to checkout and it's such an easy transaction.
I love it.0 -

Aye, I remember it not long after our local opened.
I've still got about half a dozen of the green boxes (and also see people still using theirs), which are mainly filled with things like christmas decorations and bits in the shed
I suspect where/when the stores do it is very dependant on the local population and rate of theft from the store, as from what I remember there were ongoing issues with people being less than honest with them.0 -
Is it worth doing for small shops? say, less than 10 items?0

I do wish our Tesco Extra had this. I, too, used to use the Safeway scan & crate system, must have been pre-1997 as the Ex and I used the crates to move up to Scotland!! I loved that they had trolleys designed to hold the crates, as well as normal shopping trolleys.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I'm just thinking about it, and i'm surprised none of the supermarkets have done anything like it since with the crates, given we're meant to be cutting down on the user of carrier bags, the crates are/were far more useful for a lot of shopping than the "bags for life".
We did use our green boxes for about 5-10 years for our Aldi shopping.0 -
Tesco's reinventing the wheel. Safeways had it 10 years ago plus crates and special trolleys for them.
Scan, put in crate, pay, put crate in boot.
Then Safeways were split up between the other supermarkets and the idea died until re-appearing recently
Longer than that isnt it that the idea reappeared, sainsburys down the road have had the facility for ten years or more I'd say.0 -

Yes, I still use it for small shops. It's a bit of a pain for the first few time until the system gets used to your shopping pattern, it comes up for a random check more frequently, but once it gets used to a small shop it rarely happens.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

I think Waitrose run such a system and have done for some time but you need a JL card to be able to get a scanner in the store.0 -
Would love to try this, but none of the supermarkets I shop in seem to do it.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £18,886.270
