Gericom 250Gb External Hard Drive At Aldi [CLOSED]

  • Like some others on here, I am having problems with the Gericom HDD being recognised by my system.
I am using USB2 and have recently installed SP2 on the advice of some German bloke from Gericom.
The same problem occurs, in that the system shows New Hardware found 'Disk Drive', but within 10-20 secs the computer reboots.

I have a 2 year old Medion 2GHz computer with 768Mb RAM and an 80Gb Hard Drive with 3 partitions.

    Can anyone help?

The USB is built-in, or an add-on card? I heard there were some problems with NEC chip USB PCI cards causing reboots.

SP2 would seem to be a red herring here

Easiest option - plug the drive into another machine and see how that goes

I bought the drive from Aldi on Wednesday (there were plently left, which was a surprise) and I've had nothing but trouble with it.

Basically I follow the instructions, to the point where I turn the power on. The hard drive gets detected but the computer turns to a snails pace and is unusable.

There is never an extra drive letter, which is what the instructoins say.

I have went to diskmgmt.msc, it appears there, but I cannot do anything with it.

As soon as I turn the power off, the computer springs to life and is back to normal. Something very dodgy going on.

I have tried this on 2 computers and both have had the exact same response. They are both XP SP2 as well. This is going back to Aldi.

    Cheers,

Getting quite glad I passed on this

Got all the way to Aldi, then saw they weren't going to take my credit card and bottled (no credit card protection, no sale I'm afraid!)

I'm taking the Belkin USB2 card I got back tomorrow as I have seen nowt but problems with this in the forums (and I have no USB2 drive now!)

    hi,

    mine works fine also :)

i use it mainly hooked to osx

    thanks,
  • I got the 160gb version of this from Aldi last year, and it's worked great..until yesterday when, for some reason, it stopped being identified during a torrent download. Thedrive has simply dissapeared off 'my computer' and if I try and plug it in to another USB port I jut get an error message, yet it works perfectly on my daughters PC (on a USB 1.1 port, my PC is USB 2.0)

You need to try it in another PC with USB2 to determine if the drive wont work at high speed, or if your usb port is a problem. Another idea: if it is in a front usb, or a hub - then try it directly connected to the rear usb ports (my coolmaster case front usb ports are rubbish and result in write errors - maybe crappy wiring, or suitable for usb1 only, I dont know)
  • I bought one of these Gericoms last weekend. It worked for about 20 mins, but then something went wrong, it stopped working and windows XP kept reporting "malfunctioning USB device" everytime I plugged it in.
I took it back today and I have a replacement right here, but I'm a bit suspicous now. If this thing is gonna store my data, I need convincing that we are gonna be friends... :)

There do seem to be a lot of problems with these..........and there is nothing worse than a hard drive which might be a bit flaky.......except if you need to prop the door open.

    Good luck everyone!
