Obesity To Be Classed As A Disabiity

I think that anyone with more than one chin should be penalized... ;-)
All BB users are equal; but some are more equal than others0 -
Mostly, but not in all cases, it really is as simple as that
It's very simple to define the problem and if you want to be harsh it's very simple to define the solution i.e. eat less move more.
However most of us recognise that there is a great difficulty in losing weight and the reasons people overeat are complex and deep rooted.
I consider myself intelligent but I'm on the overweight category for a number of reasons e.g.
1) simply portion sizes being too big
2) obligation eating
3) a fundamental natural drive to eat everything when it's available (yes that's INSTINCT)
4) habit
5) what I was told as a child
6) other people deciding my portion sizes e.g. restuarant chefs
I am now addressing my overweight issue with LONG term habit changes but although I consider myself intelligent I would say that changing habits is anything but easy and to be honest I don't really have other issues to deal with at the same time.
We need to be compassionate and HELP people.
We do now at least recognise that being horrible to fat people doesn't actually make the problem better.
Would we be horrible to a drug addict or alchoholic or would we like to think we'd be non-judgmental and help them? I'd like to think it's the lattter.0 -
Some poeple like myself are overweight due to genuine medical problems.
I have an under active thyroid, and polysystic ovary syndrome.
Both conditions are well known for weight gain.
I don't sit there and eat loads of crap, and try to lead a healthy diet.
I also have a heart condition which makes exercising difficult as I get out of breath so quickly.
It really annoys me that when people are big they are called nasty names and are made to feel less about themselves.
Being overweight as in my case is due to medical problems, and not lifestyle choice.0 -
i totally accept that mental health can be a big issue ... but many mental health problems can be helped, if not cured.
you see whole families of overweight people ... this is lifestyle issues. how often do you see a family with just one morbidly obese person and the rest are averaged sized?
as has been said ... no one goes to sleep a normal weight and wakes up the next morning with a massive weight issue.
people need to help themselves a bit more insyead of expecting the system to sort out every little self inflicted issue for them.
by the way , i do think larger people should be accomodated as much as usual ( larger chairs etc) but when it comes to caalling obesity across the board a disability thats wrong.
as for a previous poster daying people will gain weight to get benefits ... you really need to grow up a little!
this issue is about people being treated as disabled for work rights purposes and not as descriptors for benefit purposes.
and a fairly low proportion of the population would be capable of gaining weight to the degree where they are morbidly obese!
Please don't write in bold. It makes it difficult to read and is quite annoying - almost as bad as shouting. Thanks.0 -

Ok, this obviously doesn't refer to you, but take a look in any McDonalds on any given day and you'll be pretty much guaranteed to see a fairly high proportion of overweight (fat) people in there filling their faces with burgers and fries.
Are we supposed to feel compassionate towards them? Are you telling me they really have no control over going into McDonalds and ordering fast food? I've never been aware of gangs of McDonalds workers grabbing people off the streets and force feeding them burgers.
Yes, there are some people who have a medical condition which means they are overweight, but I think what we are talking about here are those who simply eat too much and eat too much of the wrong kind of food.
Do I feel an urge to 'help' them, as you suggest? No, not really. How would you help one of these people anyway? Block the doors of the fast food places to stop them getting in and eating themselves fat.
Once again, I'll reiterate, this isn't aimed at those with medical problems just those who choose to over eat (and there are quite a number of those).0 -

Please think before you whine, why might one person use a thick bold typeface ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. Lots of excuses, and no valid reasons for being overweight. Many people find it difficult to maintain a healthy weight, but do so through sheer hard work.0 -
