SS, re the channel thing, although the european channels can go up to 13, the frequencies are the same (or aren't they)? Ready to be corrected..
1 2399.5 MHz - 2424.5 MHz
2 2404.5 MHz - 2429.5 MHz
3 2409.5 MHz - 2434.5 MHz
4 2414.5 MHz - 2439.5 MHz
5 2419.5 MHz - 2444.5 MHz
6 2424.5 MHz - 2449.5 MHz
7 2429.5 MHz - 2454.5 MHz
8 2434.5 MHz - 2459.5 MHz
9 2439.5 MHz - 2464.5 MHz
10 2444.5 MHz - 2469.5 MHz
11 2449.5 MHz - 2474.5 MHz
12 2454.5 MHz - 2479.5 MHz
13 2459.5 MHz - 2484.5 MHz
So, the 5 channel cross channel interference issue is still the same, regardless of the extra 12 and 13 channels isn't it? UK routers still default to 1, 6, 11 to maintain the gap. I'm assuming the signal strength is the same, but that may not be the case.

This is quite a neat utility, which works on Netgear routers by default
http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
and allows telnetting etc.
this is useful for diagnosing wireless channel issues:
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
ping tells you whether you can talk, to the router, to the internet, to ip addresses and names, if some work, and others don't, it tells you where the problem lies.

Most routers have an idle timeout setting, if this isn't set to zero, then the connection may drop after inactivity.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Yup, same thing. Still only 3 non/less-overlapping channels (laws of physics don't change no matter who you are) albeit in Europe you could put a case for 1,7,13 but for all practical purposes 1,6,11 is recommended in Europe - US equipment being ever-present.
Also ready to be corrected/ignored.:D“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -

If these sources are wrong I'd like to know of other sources so I can understand why they're wrong.
Edit: If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but I just want to know why and why these sites got it wrong as well."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I've been looking but I still can't find anywhere that says 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping channels outside of FCC regions."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

My head hurts..too tired to read all that atm, I was hoping you would have a conclusive proof link;) (I'm not saying you're right or wrong, but like you if my understanding is wrong, I want to know).
I assumed the difference was just due to different regulation and standards in force in different countries, rather than a conclusive proof there is absolutely no crossover with a 4 channel separation.
One of your links mentions:
Hence, Channel 1, 5, 9 and 13 can be used almost as non-overlapping channels.
Haven't read it fully, but think this means by reducing the power output, which leads on to the secondary question, is output reduced if English is set on the router?
Whatever the answer is, the further apart the better, and as the defaults are always 1,6,11 then unless you can get all the neighbours to agree on the 4 channel separation std, 5 in particular would be a problem being so close to 6.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

So long as my wifi works I'm happy."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Probably unrelated to this thread but just to agree with one poster on here that said some things are simple that you just don't think of.
I had aproblem where my netgear kept dropping.
I had used the router for 2 years with now problems.
Could not sort it so went back to adsl modem.
After a couple of weeks ,when I was feeling up to it.
I reconnected the router and whilst doing so realised that the aerial was loose and spinning round.
I screwwed back up and all has been fine since.

hi there,
just wanted to say thanks to everyone.....
i have partly resolved the problem of the dropped connection by
1 reconnecting via the ethernet cable rather than wirelessly
2 updating the firmware
the connection does still drop sometimes but much less than before.....today, not at all!!
thanks once again

DWHL,
Just if i can recap, you said you are on Orange broadband?
Has the problem started recently or has it always been poor (disconnections, slow connections etc)?
Have Orange recently upgraded your line?
I have had exactly the same problem since my line was upgraded and no amount of phone calls to Orange support can resolve it, they keep telling you to try the same things and check the line, all a load of crap.
It is down to something called LLU, local loop unbundling, this is where Orange now have their own equipment in the BT exchanges and you get switched onto this network.
I get free broadband with my mobile but it isnt worth that.
As soon as my contract is up i am leaving.
Find more details here, http://www.orangeproblems.co.uk/phpBB2/
Best of luck resolving this but i think you are onto a loser.0
