hi everyone,
wonder whether anyone could offer any help.
i am connected to the internet via orange broadband and a netgear wireless router DG834GT. I have always seemed to have problems with the connection, it intermittently drops and I have phoned the netgear support team. they have suggeested changing th settings and currently i am PPPoA and VC based 0-38.
the connection still drops occasionally but I have discovered that rebooting my computer leads to it reconnecting.
unfortunately, the problem is recurring again and a connection can not be established by rebooting now. I have to reset the router and manually/automatically link up the router to the computer. After eventually establishing a connection the connection will once again be lost within 1/2hour and I will have to go through the process again!!
can anyone shed any light on the matter? netgear support seem to have no idea and all they can suggest is to reset the router and then when the connection is regained they tell me that the problem is resolved when it clearly isn't.
thanks for the help

I had the same problem after putting my computer in the bedroom I used a wireless router and mine intermittently dropped and it was driving me crazy after doing quite a bit of research it appears a direct connection with an Ethernet cable is the best so I had my son to drill a hole in the bedroom wall and connected directly to the modem via an extended Ethernet cable problem solved.Low Carb High Fat is the way forward I lost 80 lbs

Last few times I had these problems it was resolved by changing the channel of the wireless (in the wireless settings), caused by interference of other wireless networks. I suggest trying channels 1, 5, 9 and 13 as these don't overlap other channels so less chance of interference.
But as suggested above, ethernet is always preferable to wireless. You should only resort to using wireless if it is impractical to use ethernet."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Is it the wireless connection or the internet connection that is dropping?
Does the connection drop when you are connected to the router using ethernet cable?
If wireless then use the software your wireless card uses to scan for networks in your area. Maybe another network in range with same name/channel. If so, change essid using the web interface to your router and use a channel which is unused in your area, if possible.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -

Not seeing other networks doesn't mean they aren't there. They may not be broadcasting their SSID, so channels you may deduce to be usable, may not be. So as I posted, try 1, 5, 9, 13 first and then if you don't have success with those then try others."She is quite the oddball. Some wireless cards will report the existence of a "hidden" network and show the channel being used.
I suppose I should have left out the "If so," bit and just said "change essid using the web interface to your router and use a channel which is unused in your area, if possible".
Also the preferred channel separation between channels in neighbouring wireless networks is 5 channels. Recommended that you start using channel 1 then 6, or 11 as these three channels have the least overlap.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
when it drops, does
start, run, cmd
ping www.routerlogin.com
ping www.google.com
ping 192.168.0.1
ping 64.233.183.99
work?
if no to both, connect with a ethernet cable, wait 30 secs, and try both pings.
This will tell you, if it is a wireless pc-router issue, or a router-internet issue.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I also have this problem with a 1.5yr-old Belkin wireless cable gateway router F5D7230_v4uk. Using VirginMedia ISP.
My pc is wired by ethernet cable to it and there are 2 wireless pc's.
The router is dropping ever more often lately and it always drops my wired connection too.
Had enough after re-booting the thing by re-plugging it in for the millionth time yesterday  and phoned Belkin. I was told to try changing the channel...which I have done previously to no avail, but the guy didn't understand this and told me to phone back if it didn't work. So I'm trying the different channels again.
I'm not confident that Belkin will be any more helpful than they were(n't) in a further call.
Should I just go and buy a new router  ?0 -

That's incorrect. For the third time it's channels 1, 5, 9 and 13. I'm assuming the OP is living in the UK."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Changing channels is for the wireless ONLY. If your wired connection is dropping as well then changing channel will have zero effect as the problem is nothing to do with the wireless settings."She is quite the oddball.
