internet connection keeps cutting

It could be something very simple.
Sometimes, and I repeat sometimes, when a computer disconnects from the internet on a regular basis the fault lies with the micro-filter attached to the phone line.
Try changing it and see what happens, you never know!
Cheers

btw, yes, am in the uk....
ASFAIK what deklan99 is saying about the channels as is only true in FCC nations, ie the USA.
Under the wireless settings to change the channel it will actually be called "Channel" with a selection from 1 to 13. Simple as that. Presuming you know how to get into the router settings (though your browser and typing the IP address which will be in your manual)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

oh, just discovered how to change channels.....will try 1, 5, 9 and 13 as suggested

Of course that doesn't mean you should not try the other channels but those channels are your "best bet". It took me a few tries with different channels to solve my problem and then I had to do it all over again a couple months later when a wireless network appeared near me that chose the same channel, so don't give up."She is quite the oddball. Heres a little trick that worked for me when I had my DG834GT. This can help stabalise a connection (did for me) only problem is you have to do it everytime you start the router. Also heard this has worked really well for sky routers but you have to flash with netgear firmware to enter the telnet console.
I will try and keep it as simple as possible. Just have a muck about with different values and see if any get better/worse results. You can then take this info back to the ISP and they might be able to help if you can tell them your SNR value that works best.
The SNR should not be set lower than 6 db otherwise the broadband connection will become unstable.
Inside the DG834GT is a hidden telnet server so the first step is to activate it. Enter the following link into a browser.
192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug
You may be presented with the login promp. Use your normal username and password.
Next open a command prompt window.
START > RUN > CMD
in the window type - "telnet 192.168.0.1" without quotes and bingo you are in.
To set SNR type "adslctl configure --snr N" where N is the value from the table below (all values are aproximate so suck it and see). The router will re-sync using the new value for SNR. It may take about 20 seconds for the router to re-sync and establish a connection. It is generally recommended to have SNR > 6db.
N -- SNR(db)
6 -- 4.6
7 -- 4.8
8 -- 4.9
9 -- 4.9
10 -- 4.7
20 -- 5.6
30 -- 6.2
40 -- 6.9
50 -- 7.4
60 -- 8.2
70 -- 8.8
80 -- 9.3
90 -- 10
Type "adslctl info --stats" for router stats.
Check at the top of the stats list for your new sync rate and downstream SNR.
Type "exit" to exit.
A reboot of the router will set things back to the default SNR.
Problems stopped when I got my DG834PN0 -
A Little note... Im not sure if its your Wireless or Internet thats diconnecting but the above post by me is for the Internet connection... In my experience with the DG834GT the wireless connection would drop and cease on the router due to the firewall kicking in.... There was a big thing on the netgear forums about it a year ago.. Do you have the latest firmware???0

So do you have suggestions as to what could be the problem?
I have the latest firmware for the damned thing, our Windows firewalls are turned off as that apparently fights with the Belkin one, we have tried reconfiguring it....endlessly ....
Since I am in Gloucester and we lost all phone and cable services for 2 days, followed by all power due to the floods last weekend....could it be that VirginMedia needs to reboot the cable modem from their end?
We got them to do that after we reconfigured last time and it worked...after an entire day of us trying all sorts of things short of putting a fist through the monitors. The BIG problem is that they have since changed the support tel number to a 25p-per-minute money-making line  !! I've got to be REALLY sure if I want to phone that!0 -

Software firewalls (eg windows) don't conflict with hardware firewalls eg your Belkin. I personally wouldn't risk going without a software firewall. As for your problem it sounds like it's a problem at Virgin's end so I'm not really sure what you can do to resolve it without their help.
But just to re emphasise if your entire intenet connection is going down including the wired/ethernet connected computer then it has nothing to do with the wireless and so you can eliminate that entirely. The only thing I can suggest you try without Virgin's "help" is to make sure your pc is free of malware, so go through the malware removal guide sticky on the techie board, posts 1 to 4."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Just had to reboot the router again!
The Belkin installation instructions themselves mention disabling the Windows firewall because of conflicts... that's why we've done that. Anyway, the Windows one is useless for anything that might be calling outwards that could get through the hardware firewall on the encrypted router.
No malware present....so it looks like a lot of money going to go to Virgin.
Rebooted again as it went down while I was typing. Can't even ping the router while it's down (Destination host unreachable).
*sigh* Oh well....0
