Excavate a slit trench in front of the extension in grass or lift slabs and locate cable yourself first then trench to where you want the cable to enter building then call BT to arrange completion
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Thanks everyone for the reply, especially money_saving_matt. Apologies for the delay in posting this, but as you expect I have limited access to the internet.

Today, I cancelled my contract with EE. They were so unhelpful. They said if I want to dispute this I have to dispute it with BT directly. Clearly, they do not distinguish between BT and OpenReach and they refused to differentiate between them.

I have spoken to BT *sales and explained the problem to them. They said this shouldn't be a problem, there is an option to say 'new line needed' when I'm ordering a service from them. Clearly, they want to sell; so I don't take their word for it. I have also checked with Virgin Media and they are happy to supply a service.

As you suggested by Robin9, I will excavate a slit trench in front of the extension in grass or lift slabs and try to locate the cable.

Sterlingtimes, the solicitor did not raise such an enquiry. I emailed her after she took all of her money, but she did not respond!

I will have a go with BT and will let you know how it goes.

    Thanks everyone again.

Just a quick update for the benefit of others. I cancelled with EE and went to BT directly, they sent an engineer and he reported 'no line feed'. They passed the job to contractors and they are going to install a new line by the 10th Feb without asking me for a Penney!

...hope you have got the "no charge" guaranteed in writing (or at least email) -BT (and many other ISPs) are well known for denying phone conversations after the event -and sticking the customer with the bill !!!!
