    if you have requested to terminate the service (it is essential this is in writing) and they refuse to do so then this is a material breach in your contract. They cannot force you to keep subscribing to a service you no longer want, unless you are tied in to a minimum 12 month contract (which it doesnt sound like you are not), which case you would have to pay up the remainder of the contract.

    In this case, you are well within your right to cancel your direct debit and should not receive any adverse credit rating (you can argue this with the credit reference agencies and supply written evidence that you asked to terminate and refused). You definitely won't get bailiffs around because if it did go to court, they would not have a leg to stand on.

    If you gave written evidence that you asked to terminate and they refused, then send Virgin Media a strongly worded letter, cc OFT and OFCOM and demand that the service is terminated immediately.
