OK, if possible try to get more than one night, it's a great city.
If you want to visit Alcatraz you'll need to book weeks in advance as it sells out. We weren't bothered when we went, but if we went again we probably would go......0 -

We were thinking of doing that, so that's good to know. Thanks again0 -
These ideas wouldn't appeal to everyone, but they might save you a fair bit of money:
You could stay at a motel somewhere on a BART line and use that service to get into the city. BART map: http://www.bart.gov/sites/all/themes/bart_desktop/img/system-map.gif
Or you could stay in a motel somewhere north of the Golden Gate Bridge and use the passenger ferry service from Sausalito or Tiburon to get to the city. Ferry info: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/ferry-services/ferry-schedules
You could also investigate using CalTrain from somewhere south of San Francisco. http://www.caltrain.com
BTW do you plan to go to Yosemite? IMHO it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth and not to be missed if you have the chance."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0 -
We stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn on Lombard Street. They have an underground garage and the rate includes parking. There were quite a few places on Lombard street which is pretty good for buses and you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf from there. I can recommend the Alcatraz Night Tour - slightly more expensive, but very atmospheric and much quieter as they restrict the numbers."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0

I've just a look, this looks ideal and only $98 a night, I will speak to DH tonight and see what he thinks. Thanks a lot (and cool username btw:rotfl:)0 -
when we were in SF a couple of years ago we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn near to the airport (670 Gateway Blvd, South San Francisco) , it was a bargain compared to the inner city ones's & car parking is free, not $40-50 a day like the centre one's, only a 15 - 20 minute drive into the city centre & a really nice hotel0

It was nothing swanky but fine as somewhere to sleep - SF is expensive! Mel's Drive-in across the road is quite a famous place for breakfast although there will be cheaper options.
For Chinese try Capitol: http://www.capitalsf.com/ - we walked there in about 20 mins"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Have you checked prices and availability on the BA website?
You don't need to be flying BA, you can just use them for hotels and they often work out far cheaper than other websites.
Take this one for example
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d81222-Reviews-Radisson_Hotel_Fisherman_s_Wharf-San_Francisco_California.html
Hotels.com and booking.com both quote $359 (inclusive of tax) for one night mid April next year (I chose the 14th).
BA are charging £138 (about $214) for the same night.
Another example is the Holiday Inn express at Fishermans wharf.
http://www.britishairways.com/badp/hotel/hotelDetails.do?hotelReference=9&positionOption=18
$312 on Booking .com or £147 ($227) on BA.
Just about every hotel works out far cheaper.0 -
South San Francisco Airport & surrounding area coming up from £53 a night on Hotels.com which I have used a lot, may be cheaper booking multiple days0
