Last Minute Hotel in San Francisco - Any tips>

I'm going to visit my Dad in California next April. We are hoping to spend a night in San Francisco, which is about 70 miles away but looking at hotels they are very expensive for something that's not a total dump, if we want to book now for April.
Luckily our overnight visit doesn't have to have a set date, we will have an option of 3 or 4 to choose from (all mid week).
Does anyone have any advice about getting a last minute price on a room for the night? For example timing (a couple of weeks before or the same day?), or websites to use?
Thanks!

You have time to search around for a reasonably priced hotel and you want to leave it to the last minute? Look now for something you like then book it now.
Parking is likely to cost $$ as well, if you're driving......0 -

Dave....from what I can see, there isn't anything reasonably priced! You're at least £250 ish for anywhere half decent, which is why I thought a last minute deal might be a better option, if there were any tricks about, especially as we will have a 3 to 4 date window midweek. The Priceline site looks great.
We will be driving, but we're only staying one night, so at least it won't rack up too much0 -

San Francisco is worth staying in for more than one night.....0 -
I don't doubt that but we are on a limited timescale / budget, mainly the second option tbh. However, we plan on getting there first thing in the morning and leaving last thing the next day, to make the most of our one night.
Can you recommend what areas to look at and any to avoid?0 -

We stayed a Hotel called the Buena Vista Motor Inn, after looking on Tripadvisor this seemed to get acceptable reviews. It was OK, a little tired in decor but clean and functional. It also included free parking and a breakfast of sorts (a small selection of pastry type things).
It cost approximately $140 a night (June 2012) and was near a (cable) bus stop, and is within about a 20 minute walk of the Fishermans Wharf Cable Car Station and a further 10 minutes to Pier 39.
Yeah it was a bit budget, but I go away to see places, not the inside of a hotel......0 -
Just checked their site, looks nice and a great location, but even that's coming in at $280 a night for one of the midnight weeks we are thinking of....Gulp!0

It is Easter at the start of April, maybe check US school term times and tailor your dates accordingly......0
