Sky advice needed

Options
Hi All

Basically due to cut backs and trying to save money my girlfriend has cancelled sky and we now just have the box with no record function.

I have 2 things I would like to know:

1) We have been given a Talk Talk box which can record freeview channels but the input is a plug rather than the same aerial that goes into the sky plus hd box- is it possible to put a plug onto the aerial lead so it will fit the talktalk box?

2) As the sky account was in my girlfriends name, is it possible I can call up and buy sky as a new customer in my name?

Thanks
Dwy galon, un dyhead,
Dwy dafod ond un iaith,
Dwy raff yn cydio’n ddolen,
Dau enaid ond un taith.

    1) You're talking about plugging a freeview box into a satellite dish, so no. You need to plug that TalkTalk Freeview box into an aerial. And for the on-demand stuff, your router. You can't record Sky without paying them at least £10 per month, regardless of equipment.
    2) Don't know, you haven't got the same sirname, but they might get a bit suspicious about a cancellation and start at the same address so quickly. You should really have haggled them down if you wanted to keep them.
For budgeting reasons, if you've got an aerial, why not give Freeview a go?

    THanks for the reply...

We don't have an aerial persay, our input comes straight from the dish and into the back of the box without coming into an aerial socket on the wall.

I thought as much about the new contract, I may well wait a little if I cant convert the lead coming from the dish

If you don't have an aerial then you can at least continue to use the Sky box for the free channels.

Note that these are not the same as on Freeview, slight differences in channel line up

You'll only get "new" customer deals after 12 months of cancellation. The account is for your household, not an individual. If you still want Sky, however, your girlfriend will likely be still able to haggle the price down in order to return.

You do realise that your old Sky box will still receive all the Free-To-Air channels? That's a similar offering to Freeview and won't require an aerial because it receives signals through your existing dish.

    Thanks both,

Yes I know we will receive the freeview bits on the sky box, we just wanted to be able to record on the box as its very rare we get a chance to sit down and watch tv together...

You'll have a to buy a Freesat PVR for that. The Talk Talk box is useless without an aerial and it would likely cost as much to install one as to buy a Freesat decoder which would simply plug into your existing satellite set-up.
  • If your girlfriend logs into her Sky account, if it is still active, she may see an offer there for 50% off any package, for 12 months. I closed my sky subscription a couple of months ago but then signed up again for "half price" Variety and Sports (£26.25 a month, when I saw the offer on My Sky.
  • Are you sure you don't have an aerial socket in your wall somewhere? It's a white socket with a small round plug in the middle, a bit like on the back of your talktalk box.

It'd be quite unusual for a home not to have one, is there an aerial on the roof/in the loft?

No you won't. Freeview is received via an aerial not a dish.

    Don't unnecessarily confuse the issue.

The Free-to-air channels are the virtually the same (with a few notable exceptions) whether received from satellite or terrestrial transmitter.
