Hive. It's a board-less board game for two players. Apparently now available as a travel version (although the original is v portable). Just need a flat surface to play on. Beautiful Bakelite pieces.

Each hexagonal piece is engraved with an insect. Different insects move in different ways and the object is to get your opponent's Queen Bee surrounded. The Beetles are great fun.

Original set has now been expanded by new pieces, so make sure you get the Mosquito (evil!!). There are also Ladybirds & Woodlice too according to the famous online encyclopaedia.

A game that's fun for adults too, and good when you want just a two-player game for some quality time when others are doing other things.

  • If he's into tactics and strategy, try Sequence. We love it.
  • My 12 year old loves Risk, there is also an app version. Uno & monopoly the card game are popular too.
  • Buy him an xbox. Hasbro have just released a board game collection on the xbox that is cheaper than buying a real board game. I think you get 12 board games that can be played by up to 8 players. If you download it from the xbox store it is i think £12.99.
  • The Board game collection might be cheaper than a traditional board game, but buying the Xbox in the first place isn't....

Personally, I like Carcassonne. Settlers of Catan (as recommended above) is good as well.

Asked DS for you this morning, and his precise words were "Mum, how could you forget Carcassonne? I love it and it'd be a fool who hated it."

He also mentioned ticket to ride.
