Was going to say the same thing. Well, almost, my V+ box does this if left on.0 -
Could be an MI5 bug, they sometimes play up. Phone GCHQ to check. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

If you put on your tinfoil hat I'm sure the noise will no longer exist.0

Passenger: "What's that whining noise?"
Stewardess: "Nervous passengers."0 -
Also, I wasn't planning on having the central heating serviced this year (ie to save money) because much of it is only about a year old (new boiler and new radiators at that time)
I would have it serviced as it may affect any warranty you have.
Sorry Money, but Adonis is absolutely right here. If you don't have your boiler serviced it will make the guarantee null and void.
Re the noise. Can you here it outside. I know you have moved to a more rural area and am assuming are quite some distance from factories and/or manufacturing processes but could it be something "on the wind" . Bearing in mind it's now winter so no leaves on the trees to muffle sound ..........
I used to live several miles away from a certain famous aero engine factory. Most of the time you couldn't hear a thing, not even the test beds when they were testing jet engines. However just occasionally when the weather conditions were right, usually calm still days in winter, you could just detect a faint background noise.
I do think though that with our plethora of electrical goods, gadgets and gizmos it's almost impossible to have total absolute silence.
I do have mild tinnitus at times but even so I can often hear very low level noise in houses which I've been unable to locate. My tinnitus sounds like I have an insect in my ear so a very different sound to the "house" noises Or low level hums.0 -
Didn't realise you are in a rural area, could be an electric fence. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

No no no,
Next post, "I'm getting white noise..../........."
Answer "introduce pink noise to over shadow wh....././..."
Might as well get the full symphony in if you do that.
There is no longer any such thing as silence, it's about living with the lack of it
Plus, it's not just the bedroom, it's the whole house.
I don't want to offend the OP, but are you sure you don't have at least a touch of tinitis????I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Thanks for your thoughts re central heating servicing, ie in order to protect my guarantee on boiler.
I have duly arranged for a firm to come in and check it out and hopefully they will be a suitable firm for a yearly check-up and any work needing doing ever.
I've been and had a peer at my boiler and am wondering if its maybe gone and "adjusted itself" to a higher pressure than its supposed to be somehow, as I seemed to be standing there for some time watching steam come off the outlet pipe outside and can see the boiler is set at 70C (ie presumably the water temperature - which I thought I recall having set at 60C!) and there is a sort of "glass shape" there with two lines across it and an indicator level on it and that indicator strikes me as not being far from the top of those 2 lines.
Am wondering whether the "culprit noise" might boil down to some workman has, in the course of doing something else involving the boiler, adjusted it differently to the way I required and the noise might be too high pressure combined with the narrow type pipes there are in many houses here to the radiators (including mine). I have a house thermostat of a type that means the central heating cannot be switched off on it. It just has a day and night setting and will automatically keep the house to, at least, night temperature I've set. I can only switch the system off totally by going into the boiler room there and switching off a light switch type switch that the installer basically told me not to use (no comment from me about that installer in the event......).
Will get that central heating looked at first now. Its gone too dark for the day now to try switching off the electrics experimentally, so that's a task for tomorrow.0 -
My first guess would be water moving through the pipes. Try opening all the valves on the radiators full, wait half an hour for it to settle down, then lie down and listen.0

To the best of my knowledge I don't have tinnitus (thankfully!). Am guessing that's one of those things some people may get for no known reason, but the ones I've come across with it to date can pinpoint why (ie being subjected to heavy gun noise without ear protection on the one hand or lots of loud pop music on the other hand). I've not had any of either of those sort of things and have been quite protective about my hearing over the years, having heard the tales from people with tinnitus.
The noise has only been the last few days and I'm pretty darn sure it aint me at least. I've stood and had a good listen by my boiler and am feeling more suspicious of it than I was and now hoping that is the case, as it should be quite easily resolvable if so.
Must try out PN's suggestion this evening, once I've stopped being on alert for Mr Boilerman (who might be calling in shortly just for a looksee).
I don't mind the odd bit of non-silence in my home (provided it is occasional and with good reason), ie a bit of "adjusting" by my fridge or freezer, a little wind down a chimney or birdsong and rain outside and can manage, in the main, not to have "noise" here. My computer is much quieter than my previous one (had it specially made up for me and just a quiet whir that I don't mind, rather than a heavy-duty fan noise like the last one had).0
