The Cars We've Owned

  • Quartic, actually.

  • My very first car was a banger of a Nova I bought for <£100. Literally got to have a mess about with and learn about cars.

Then about a week after I got it the little chavs from the local naughty boys' school stole it and trashed it :(

My first "proper" car was my little 53 Seicento (name: Seisei). I adored that little creature and drove all over the country in it :)

When that broke I bought a Daewoo Matiz (name: Tizzy) as a stop-gap. It got me around for about six months before the radiator cracked and the alternator went.

Then it was trusty little Corsa (name: Paddy) for the next three years. Never let me down, got me around in all weathers, cheap as chips to fix...until one day it wouldn't start, and in fact never started again! Garage couldn't find a thing wrong after 5 hours of labour, but still no joy, so car heaven it was.

Next came the wreck of a Fiesta (name: Betty) who did alright until she chucked half a tank of petrol over the engine. Never did find out what that rumbling noise was either...

Which brings me to my current box-on-wheels, the Hyundai Getz (name: Paul). Got a bit of a squeak on startup, but otherwise I love it - even if I did flap the wipers at people for a while as the indicators are on the other side ;)

    HBS x

    1975 Saab 96 V4, loved that tank.
1987 Nissan Bluebird Estate, had to keep the doors locked at all times when driving round Birmingham as I'd get students jumping in thinking I was a taxi.:rotfl:
1989 Mk1 MR2 moonroof, lowered with a noisey exhaust. Died of rot and the wiring loom self destructed.
    1987 Mk1 MR2 T-Bar, still got this one. Now with a V6 shoehorned in.
1989 Gen 4 Celica, bought for a tenner off e-bay with a bust cambelt. repaired it but the rot was too bad to get through an MoT. :( Gave it to my Dad to part ex against a Mazda 3.
1993 Gen 5 Celica widebody, fab car served me very well but the old rev 2 3SGE suffered from many oil leaks.
1994 Hilux Surf V6, absolute beast but very thirsty.
1995 Gen 6 Celica SS3, current car and loving it.

as you may tell I love my Toyotas and am a fully converted Bangernomics practioner. :D

I had a Landcruiser 3.4 VX (V6) and it never ever let me down, probably one of the best all round cars ever, my mrs was absolutely devastated when i got rid of it, and we have had some far more exotic and luxury top of the range cars since, (not any more unfortunately) but the Landcruiser is the one she loved the most and still talks about it now almost six years after i sold it.

Same here but it was an older, more rounded version van, Regal Mk VI I think. It had a side valve engine, 750cc?. Cornering could be a challenge if you didn't want to end up on two wheels, the front and one rear. If you avoided a pothole/bump in the road with the front wheel, one of the rear wheels would hit it!
Same reason, I only held a motorcycle licence. I remember that a plate had to be fitted to block reverse gear. Reverse wasn't allowed with a m/c licence. Parking was a nightmare without prior planning. Soon after buying the rules were relaxed and the plate could be removed!

I have owned several Saab cars over the years but have to say my favourite car for pure enjoyment to drive was a Saab 99 Turbo.

Fifty quid's worth of antique imported Citroen 2Cv.

Driver door dropped off occasionally; usually at bus stops. Seat was low enough for you to scoop it up and throw it in the back without getting out.

Godchildern got fed up with being told (in the 1990's) that their posh trainers cost more than my 1st car. Now even one trainer costs more than my 1st car...

Funny thing was, despite rustholes for aircon, I loved it; guess what my 1st ever new car was? Citroen Dyane costing £700 on the road inc annual tax disc (Dyane was a 2Cv derivative; they didn't import the real thing til a few years later...)

Bought my first car in 2004 - 1997 Renault clio - and its still going (Give it mum- hoping if she keeps it much longer it will be worth more than the £700 I paid 10 years ago!)
Bought a new Polo in 2007
2014 - above polo written off, so bought another 2007 polo.

First car after I passed my test; Mk 1 VW Golf GTi in black.

I then had an idiotic idea and bought a white XR3i, filled the boot with speakers and added a whale tale Cosworth spoiler. Beastie Boys and Run DMC played very loudly at all times.

Went to live in the Canary islands and sold the XR3i.

Came back after two and a half years and ended up with an MG Metro (lame). That got stolen from my driveway (thankfully).

My boyfriend at the time had the following, all of which I got to drive on a regular basis. Astra GTE, Porsche 911 with the Targa roof, and two Lotus Esprits, one of which was number 4 of the 40 issued for the 40th year anniversary of Lotus. It was pearlescent white with a blue leather interior and a CD autochanger.

Then I bought a brand new Escort 1.8 td in Tourmaline Green. Beautiful car, had the turbo tweaked and beat a 2.8 Capri easily.

After having two kids, we had a Zafira (most mechanically awful car ever).

Now have a 1.8 tdci C Max Zetec. In my dreams I drive either a Viper Green Scirocco tsi or a Fiat 500 Abarth.

My dad has a lot to answer for, I was watching Top Gear when I was in nappies.
