  • The one I saw on the screen when I applied for the voucher didn't have my name on it, but the e-mailed version did. I took both versions with me, & the woman put the one with my name on it uppermost. She entered the voucher number on the computer, so my guess is that they'd know if someone tried to use the same voucher number twice. Even if they didn't pick up on it in the shop, I think it would be picked up when the computer entries are checked, in which case someone might get a letter asking for payment.

    What's the deal?

Dollond & Aitchison is offering a free eye test (these are free in Scotland anyway), usually priced at £27.50, at any of its 380 branches until 11 Sept. It's available to all who haven't had a test at D&A within the past two years.

    How to get it

To claim the free test, visit D&A's website, fill in the short form and a voucher will be emailed to you. You'll need to print this out.

Then give Dollond & Aitchison a call on 0800 052 8000 to arrange an examination before 11 September. It's worth mentioning you have this voucher when booking the appointment, plus remember you MUST take it with you.

You don't have to buy glasses from D&A

D&A's offering this freebie as it hopes you'll buy specs or lenses from it if you need them, but this isn't a prerequisite. Before parting with your cash, read both my Glasses Buying and Contact Lens cost cutting articles to help slash the amount you pay.

I take it that you had to have the magazine for the voucher not just print one off the web page. Shame I only read it today- didn't get the paper!

OK .......... keeping it short, got D&A to do an Eye Test from scratch ............. normally when you have an eye test, they take your glasses off you to test the prescription in them ............. my advise DO NOT LET THEM  , as they had to carry out the eye test from scratch and I received a much more thorough examination and only after it was completed did I let them test the glasses I had to compare the results.

Their results differed from the ones Tesco had done, so I went straight back, complained and received a FULL refund there and then ............ plus an admission that they (Tesco Options) use a 'locum service' to supply their opticians and I was not the first to have had a problem with the chap who tested me (nice to know AFTER the fact!).

Then after writing to their Head Office (Tesco) I received a two page apology letter and £60 compensation ............. result.:T

Moral of this story .............. TRUST NO ONE, especially when they give away Freebies such as Eye Tests ............... and remember, hunt out at least two of these offers (or if like me you feel you've been given a duff prescription pay for a second one and then CLAIM IT BACK if proven right ....... you'll know!) and get them to test your eyes from scratch with NO REFERENCE from your old prescription.
