After hunting around this morning I eventually found a suitable blank card with a baby-like picture on the front of it, so I was able to write my own message.

I also bought a tiny soft toy.

It's a worrying time, and none of us wants to put our foot in it by doing the wrong thing, but it felt mean not getting anything.

supersaver2, 23 weeks, wow. I know this will sound so clicheed, but it really IS amazing what medicine can do now.

Glad you found a card you were happy with. Sure it will mean a lot to mum and dad.

Totally agree, thank goodness for the wonderful NHS and the hardworking staff. Our daughter is perfect now at 3 years old, just a little small and she was so poorly and small at birth. Babies are tough little things and I'm sending my prayers and thoughts to your friends and little one. It's hard spending Christmas in hospital but hopefully it will only be a very small part of their journey together as a family.
  • My daughter was born at 28weeks. Some people acknowledged her and some didn't.
I was more hurt that people didn't acknowledge it.

She was in hospital for six months. She is 23 now

Personally I'd send a card, they have had a baby and that should be celebrated

The other possible thing is rather than buying clothes like people tend to do with new babies - it's definitely one of those cases where things like Mothercare (I mention them as they do tiny/early baby ranges - although obviously a bit in the future) gift cards are a good idea... we got so much stuff that people had bought in newborn and particularly things like 3-6 months (because of buying ahead thinking we'd be innundated with newborn stuff) sizes and I remember getting home and bawling my eyes out thinking she'd never ever be big enough to fit in this stuff!

As it happens she's now tall for her age as genetics took over and she had a massive growth spurt and completely seemed to miss out 9-12 months size stuff and wasn't much fussed on 12-18 months either - but at the time it really really brought things home to me about how tiny she was and how we had bog all clothes that we'd actually been able to choose for her ourselves if that makes sense.

I'm so glad I asked on here and sent the card and toy. The parents were pleased to get them.

A bit late now as I see you've already sent something but if you or someone you know is crafty a nice idea I saw on my local breastfeeding page is two make two blankets- one 20x20 inches and one 5x5 inches. The big one put with baby for a while so it smells of them, then mum can have it close by when expressing (if she chooses to bf) and the smaller one mum can hold for a while then put with baby so they can be comforted by mum's smell
Just thought it was a nice thoughtful and practical gift whilst they're in hospital x

It'll be nice for them in years to come to have the toy as some contrast to use when showing their child photos of just how small they were. We have a fantastic photo of my youngest propped between the legs of a huge teddy bear - she's now taller than the bear by far!

On a practical note, when my boy was in NICU we weren't allowed to bring in any toys that were not sterilised, so nothing made with fabric. We brought in a plastic toy and they put it in the steriliser every few days.

Different units have slightly different polcies regarding this.

Know ones that don't allow soft toys, know those that do.

Don't buy one that's bigger than the baby, as it's difficult to find space for it.

It's always nice to recieve a simple acknowledgement of a major event, even if the otcome is unknown ...

Hi, I just thought I'd post an update. Thankyou to everyone who replied.

Baby left hospital this week :)

4 months in hospital with various medical problems, but home now, although still needing oxygen at times.

I'd now like to find something like a welcome home or 'congratulations on leaving hospital' card for a baby, if such a thing exists!

    That's great to hear!

Try Moonpig or something, you can personalise it then. Possibly a "welcome home <baby name>" would work?
