Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm not looking to kick up a fuss and common sense says I'll sort it out myself, I was just rather surprised to find myself with holes in my house. Yes, I am new to this home owner business and everything is still very much at the novelty stage!0

the guy who does the signs for our old EA was a total numpty too.
He hammered some massive nails into our wall which caused big chips, cracks and holes. The obvious thing to do would have been to put the post into the ground (earth) or strap it to the wall/pillar.
We complained to the EA, told them to take it down and insisted we didn't have a sign from then on (even then the same guy tried to come back and hammer it back onto the wall - luckily my wife was in and noticed him before he'd started).
I think in many cases, not/having a sign will make make any real difference to the success of the sale...0 -

It's always on a post just outside the house.
Maybe even just outside the garden.
This is a nuisance, having the holes left in the wall, but really not much effort to fix yourself.
Hardly worth making a fuss about.
How funny, what a middle class statement, you clearly live in the leafy suburbs where everyone has a front garden and no houses are joined together.
In areas where there is terraced housing directly onto the street where else would a sign be put?0 -

Makes you wonder why anyone would resurrect a thread simply to make a statement that is complete nonsense.0 -

True, but while we're on the subject I agree with ognum - our last house, a period vilłage property which at 2500 sq ft was neither very small nor particularly large, nonetheless fronted straight onto the pavement and had no front garden, forecourt etc and therefore no obvious place to locate the typical board on a post.
The company used by our EA used what they termed a *cottage board* - v-shaped that required no post, although it still had to be nailed into the front elevation of the building of course......and on two sides of the *v* thus making twice the number of holesMortgage-free for fourteen years!
Over £40,000 mis-sold PPI reclaimed0 -

Oh yes, it wasn't ognum's post I was objecting to, it was brightonman who resurrected the thread and whose post made no sense anyway.0 -

Understood.....I guess I misquoted, doh
What I meant was that whilst I agree the post by brightonman was rather pointless, I thought it worth emphasising whilst the thread was in the throes of resurrection, that in certain types of property there is no option but to affix the board to the house itselfMortgage-free for fourteen years!
