incorrect, I have just pre-registered and received my Number and temporary password. I just put 'no' against the 'existing products' question..

I asked the man on the helpdesk why I couldn't just register without the existing products, and he said it wasn't permissible.

Was he correct that it will be just as easy to buy on-line at the time, or is there some point in perservering with pre-registration?

On a practical note, anyone applied to similar bonds in the past?

Can one apply online & pay by transferring from an NS&I Direct Saver account?

Or should one transfer the money in advance to a current account?

What online payment methods are likely to be available?
    Bump. ?
When they are announced, they can be bought online by debit card anyway, without registration, or by phone using debit card.
    How about existing Direct saver?
  • I don't have an NS&I account. Can I still apply on line or by phone when the bonds become available, or do I have to complete a form before doing so ??
    thanks

As both 2.8% & 4% tax paid is better than ISAs offer.

Just to clarify. Interest is paid after tax has been deducted but those rates are gross. After tax 2.80% & 4.00% for non-taxpayers (who will have the tax deducted and have to reclaim it); 2.24% & 3.20% for standard rate tax payers; 1.68% & 2.40% for higher rate tax payers and 1.54% & 2.20% for additional rate tax payers (who will have 20% tax deducted and have to pay additional tax yearly even though they have no access to the interest before maturity).

Currently the best ISA rates are 1.65% for 1 year and 2.15% for 3 years. So yes even after tax has been deducted, for all but the highest rate tax payers investing for one year the "Pensioner Bond" rate is better than what ISAs offer.

Well logically it can't be 'just as easy' as you won't have an ID and Login so an amount of additional information will be needed, if it's possible at all. I wonder whether their definition of 'online' includes by phone!? Certainly the phone lines may be somewhere between busy and flooded come the release, whereas with pre-registration one can hope and intend to purchase at an ungodly hour when things are quieter. If they are going to be as popular as forecast at least it gives another option.

Another query. As these bonds can be held in single or joint names by people in the later stages of their lives, from a Death/probate viewpoint is it more sensible to hold them in single names or joint names? If a joint bondholder dies would they have to be cashed in or would the survivor automatically inherit and continue being able to hold it until the end of its life.

As this could affect a lot of pensioners I hope guidance will be issued on this point as I believe all previous NSandI products have always been issued in single names only?

    update to my post 87:
just logged in with the new credentials to find NS&I have automatically linked my account to 3 x £1 premium bonds that were bought for me in 1957 !! (and that I'd completey forgotten about).
So although I put 'no' to Other Investments it still found them and linked to them with no problem.

The registration questions seem to all be answered on their website:

    http://www.nsandi.com/our-online-and-phone-service?select=o2i1
    Do I need to register?

    No, if:
    • you have an NS&I Direct ISA or Direct Saver – you’re already registered
    • you have recently applied, or are about to apply, for an NS&I account online or by phone – we’ll register you as part of your application
    • you’re not yet an NS&I customer

    Yes, if:

you want to manage your existing NS&I accounts online or by phone and you haven’t already registered

So if you aren't registered yet but feel you want to be registered, you could open a Direct Saver with £1 straight away.

EDIT: Note I am less than convinced that registering now would actually speed up your PB application much if at all as you can't actually apply for additional products whilst being logged into your account. Having a registration already in progress when applying for the PBs might just mess things up for you.
To apply you'll need to log out of our online service to learn more about our range and decide what's right for you.
