ParkingEye add insult to injury

I paid double the necessary parking charge because it was too dark to see the list of charges at the paypoint. I then received a £100 penalty notice, which I obviously did not appeal against, but suggested they check their facts properly. I also claimed a refund of £2 overpaid, and a further payment of £20 for embarrassment and distress caused by the receipt of an unwarranted demand, which would be going to charity.
Got 2 letters back.
(1) "We can confirm that this charge has been cancelled and there is no outstanding payment due on this account."
(2) "All invoices issued to ParkingEye in relation to any alleged loss, cost or expense or opayments sought in relation to payment, appeal or any other issue by motorists are categorically rejected. You have not formed a legally binding contract with ParkingEye, under which any right to invoice for payment for goods or services may arise; therefore as stated your invalid invoice is rejected."
In the first instance, it was their mistake. Would it have really hurt them to apologise?
In the second instance, do they have a right to ignore a counterclaim?
I tried phoning them up to speak to a manager. First of all they said they had cancelled the charge, so what did I want to talk about? Then they said I had overstayed the time. Then they agreed that I hadn't. Then they didn't want to talk to me any more.
The managing director of this company is Paul Dawson, but it is owned by Capita.
Is there any point in pursuing this as a matter of principle? I have tweeted to Capita about it, but only got a response from another motorist.

Comic sans has a very important use -deciphering complex passwords
dl1Inmh in arial becomes dl1Inmh in comic sans, it is the easiest way to tell a lower case L from an upper case i.

With respect Marylynn there is very little of value to add. You have beaten PE and they have thrown a strop, what did you expect, a dozen roses?
However, for the record, I rather like CSMS. I use it to sell items on eBay. I suspect that Mr Baster has granite worktops in his kitchen, and pays over £30 for a reed diffuser.You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0
