Almost Took My Life

Hello all!

No need to beat about the bush, I tried to kill myself over debt on Thursday.

Took a load of pills with drink and ended up in a&e.

My parents know what has happened but haven't really talked about it.

I'm feeling super low at the moment for what I have done to them and to myself.

Where do I go from here.

Just any guidance or words will be helpful.

Sorry if this is short I'm still processing.

I just don't know what to say, I can't imagine how you must be feeling. I didn't want you to see the 'views' and think no-one cares.

So much love to you, concentrate on getting better and use all the support networks you can. Debt worries can be all consuming but you are so much more important than your debt xxx

Nothing is worth taking your own life least of all money. Please contact one of the free debt charities and the Samaritans to get some support.
Lean on your family for support - you start the conversation as they may be feeling difficult about bringing it up.
Meanwhile keep posting here - the people are great.

No debt is worth your life. You are not in the right frame of mind to be thinking about it at the moment, so leave the debt out of your mind as much as you can. You can deal with the debt later and no debt is insurmountable.

    Speak to your GP.

Make sure you have people around at all times.

  • I agree with bedhair. It will make you feel better just talking about it, but if you're family aren't the type to talk you'll have to be the brave one and bring it up yourself. Choose your timing so you won't be interrupted or rushed and choose who you think will listen most.

Keep telling yourself that you're worth fighting for. You will come out of the other side one day. We're all human and make mistakes. This one is yours, learn from it. Wouldn't like to admit to some of the mistakes I've made. Haha. I wish you all the luck in the world talking to your family.
I love a bargain. Now mortgage and debt free. hurray!!:smileyhea

It's only money. MSE Martin has never seen a debt problem that doesn't have a solution so the situation is probably nowhere near as dire as you think it is. Phoning a debt charity such as Step Change or CAP would be a good idea.

It's also worth getting all your statements from the last 12 months and putting together a statement of affairs.

This can be for your eyes only, to share with your family, or you can post it on here. Lots of the forum users will have ideas on how to improve your statement of affairs so that you can kick your debt into touch. Just getting a clear idea of where you are and talking about it with someone (even a bunch of internet strangers) will help ease the weight that's clearly on your shoulders.

Bit of a cliche but its one for a reason - suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Money worries can be fixed but you can't come back after death.

There are lots of solutions around but if things seem too much the Samaritans and breathing space are both great places to call. Take care and make use of the resources on here - we are a community keen to help.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Talking will be good, but if your family are not the talking types, then the Samaritans will be a good step.

One of the debt charities will be able to help as well. Once you have talked to them and found out your options, it will give you some control over the issue.

Could you parents or other family member help at all to bring it down before you go to the next stage.

    Take care

I want to echo what the others have said, debt is not worth dying over.
You don't mention how much you owe, but whatever the amount, there is a solution.
If all else fails, there is, ultimately, Bankruptcy.

Not as scary as its made out to be, all your debts, no matter how big, can just disappear using this piece of legislation.
You can either petition for it yourself, or one of your creditors can, its the ultimate "get out of jail free card", and you can be free from it in as little as one year.

I'm not saying this solution is right for you, but just to let you know, there is always A solution to any debt problem, without risking health and wellbeing.

I agree with what other posters have said. Suicide is not the answer - but I do understand as I have been in that position myself. As Sourcrates says, if all else fails there is bankruptcy. It is not the first thing to try but is an option if needs be. My OH and I are paying back a huge sum of money and it is daunting, but it's only money - life is about so much more. This is a very supportive and informative forum so do keep visiting. The Samaritans are great and you can get lots of practical advice from Step Change or National Debtline. As Martin says - no debt problems are unsolvable. Your post has prompted me to update my signature as we have paid off more debt now - it can be done.
