Hi all
We have a fireplace in our living room that has never been connected to the gas in the 4 and a half years we have lived here,
today i was wrapping presents and noticed that there was a gas smell coming from the pipe next to the fireplace.
i phoned the landlord and his phone was off, i phoned his wife and she said he has gone to india until next friday.
she said the man he normally works with has gone with him so she is not sure what to do.
she said she will phone him in the morning to see what he suggests, she has said to do what we think is best!
we have turned the gas off at the mains but am not sure what to do next?
we are with british gas but dont have homecare, do i get a gas man out and deduct the money from the rent?
where do i stand in doing that? is there any procedures i should follow?
thanks

Phone Transco immediately - they will send a man out immediately.
You don't farq around when you smell gas.
They will tell you to throw the lever to "off" in the gas cabinet - and they'll tell you to go and stand outside.
There is no charge... this is an emergency gas smell callout, like calling 999 for gas.
I did it once.
Dial 0800 111 999

They say a man will be there within the hour.0 -
The place is safe now so wait till the LL is informed in the morning. No one will turn out tonight anyway.0

Yes, they are always there very quickly. The place is safe now so wait till the LL is informed in the morning. No one will turn out tonight anyway.
NO!!!!!!! A smell of gas needs immediate attention. Open all the windows and doors, switch off at mains if you know how, and vacate the building - you and your immediate neighbours if they are closely.lessonlearned wrote: »No, no, no.
This is entirely the wrong advice on so many levels.
A gas leak requires immediate attention and the residents need to vacate the premises.

The gas supply is off. Lets not get confused. Its off. No supply. Yes venting the building is good. But lets not get excited. The gas is off. No more gas. Clear enough?0 -

Very sensible Kim. No way should anyone 'leave it til tomorrow' if they can smell gas. Good grief! Giving views and opinions is one thing, but giving the wrong advice in such a precarious situation is plain dangerous! You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0

Impossible. The gas is off. You read that right? Running around close to mid night in minus 5 isnt ideal. Lets get perspective. You also read the word "today" right? Rather than "tonight," or "right now"?0 -
