The old "can't repair a puncture" scam

Had a puncture from a large screw stuck in tyre, so I phones up the local tyre shop.
Yep, we can do that for £20 they said.
Off I travels, with my wheel.

Once they had my tyre off they said, "oh we can't repair it as it has had tyreweld to stop a previous leak"

So I had to fork out £170 for a new tyre.

What a swiz!

Just letting people know, if they have used Tyreweld, they won't repair the puncture

Tyreweld is usually used for puncture repairs so it is possible the tyre had been punctured before, which may have influenced their decision. There are also standards (BSAU 159 which detail what areas of the tyre can be repaired as well as the maximum size of the hole.

I had a similar thing but hadn't used tyreweld, tyre puncture too near edge of tread to repair, tyre done less than 3k miles! Plus they said I should buy two new tyres as the tyre was no longer available! This was on a new Nissan. Anyway I bought a repair kit and did it myself, now done 16k miles and still OK.

Well it might be or it might not be.

    Tyreweld can be removed.

It's just a PITA to clean out and it's possible they just didn't want to do it.

It depends on where the damage was and the general state of the tyre, etc.

Having said all that i doubt they forced you to put on the new £170 tyre by using thumbscrews?

if the screw was in the centre of the thread then repair is an option, if the screw was towards the edge of the tread then repair may not be possible

But i think alleycat has hit the nail on the head by saying they didn't want to clean the tyre weld gunk out of the old tyre so told you it was scrap

If you pay a garage enuff £money then they'll happily clean dogsh!te out of a tyre, so gunk shouldn't really be too much of a problem.

    Perhaps there's some other reason?

If you ever manage to catch a semi tame tyre fitter outside of its natural environment, have a quiet chat about the pitfalls & potential risks involved with puncture repairs on modern radial tyres.

Ask them if they'd be happy driving along at 70mph with the wife & kids on a tyre that's had a repair or 'gunk' inside it?

If you use the kit I do you can do them on the edge, cost less than £5 on ebay. Is same as garage uses I went to for 15 years.
  • I doubt it's a scam. Given that the tyre was filled with "tyre gunk" seems to suggest it has had at least one repair already. Therefore, the structural rigidity of the tyre would already have been compromised. The repairing garage probably though it would be unsafe to effect another repair on the tyre.

Would you rather that than have to right a thread asking for legal advice three months down the line when your tyre gives up on the motorway and you crash into the central reservation?

It can be removed but it is a time consuming process which tyre fitters can't be bothered doing/

However most people now use "Slime" rather than "Tyreweld" as it just washses out, meaning tyre fitters can't fob people off any more
