You were given naff information by Natwest. Payments, whether contactless or not, will come off your available balance once a retailer tells the bank about them. This is not always instant, and the bank has no control over it.
sounds like you would benefit from having separate accounts? It is very easy to add another current account at Natwest, and you can make instant online transfers between accounts.sparky260500 wrote: »and not known by me wife at home buying things online.0 -

And it would still not solve the issue that you may have committed other money to be paid from your available funds. Such as Direct Debits and Standing Orders.
You just need to assume responsibility for your own money. It can be done, tens of millions of people do it every day.
when you put your card in the reader and enter your pin retailers have to report it then how ever small amount. so what the difference when its contactless.0 -

The fact that you have a contactless (offline) card from Natwest means they trust you enough to manage your account and its available balance and overdraft well.
If you don't feel they should trust you that much you can always ask them to switch you to a blue, online-only card with no contactless support, then you'll be guaranteed that a transaction will only ever go through if you have the available balance for it in your account at that moment.0 -

You are mistaken again. For your PIN to be validated, no connection to the bank is required. Retailers have floor limits below which they take payments without prior authorisation. But even if they got authorisation for every single transaction it doesn't mean they will report every single purchase individually.0 -
Here is an extract from the official Natwest contactless guide:Before making transactions it’s important to check you have funds in your account as not all retailers check with the bank before your transaction is agreed.

What they mean is that it is important that you to check you have sufficient funds in your account.0 -

Hi Archi Bald
thanks for all the great information you have given. Ive been in contact with Natwest again and they said that i was misinform before by the adviser i was talking to. And you were right it can take a few days for contactless payments to show on your account. :beer:0 -
If you have a smartphone there are apps you can use to record your spending. It may take some co-ordination with t'other half though, unless you both update something like a dropbox spreadsheet.0
